Re: Engineer outa be shot...

Just an easy way to say the truth.... sorry to say but that's it folks

So sad, but so very true. GM, and the others, just don't get it.
Until they DO get it, they will continue to loose market share and a loyal customer base.

Re: Engineer outa be shot...

me thinks it will only get worse, our government wants anything 10 years old off the road, and nobody able to repair but a tech. Also mods will not be allowed, maybe not even paint,,,,,

I have a chrysler sebring (04) same battery location, I had to go to the manual to find the ******* thing. At least they put in jump start posts. Stupid design!!!

I too have slowed down on working on auto's, call it getting old if ya want but it aint as much fun as it used to be. Since the back surgery it takes me much longer to do anything to a vehicle! I work on overhead bridge and gantry cranes, dont have a problem going up its getting back down, I keep jumping out of reverse!:D

wheres my anti grav belt???

oh ya leave to an engineer to really screw things up!

I agree. Getting down is easy... getting up is a different story.

I never had one, but a co-worker back then did... I think the all-time prize for poor engineering was the early-70's Chevy Monza. As I remember, the engine compartment was originally designed for a Wankel rotary engine, but at the last minute Chevy put in a traditional one. So in order to change the back 2 (4?) spark plugs, you had to pull the engine:eek:.

And 35 years ago, figure on replacing plugs about every 20k miles.

Re: Engineer outa be shot...

I just got off the phone with a buddy I grew up with who runs a repair shop since we were kids. I mentioned this post and we both laughed at how the car owners have been screwed by the auto industry. We took turns remembering cases of poor engineering and the chore of repairing those cars. It's a small wonder why a bill can go through the roof when it takes 4 hours to change a water pump etc. We could have gone on for hours citing examples of poor planning, not to mention putting Buick motors in Chevys, shipping Cadilllacs with Chevette transmissions and other downright underhanded tricks. It's truly a shame that it happened and continues to happen, but until folks start thinking past the frivolous add-on's and start thinking about the long term cost of ownership, they are the auto makers fair game...the fact of the matter is that sheep get shorn.

You must remove the driver's side wheel & halfshaft to change the starter on a '89 Honda Accord LXI......

you have to remove the intake manifold of a caddy northstar v8 to change the starter. they are not getting any easier to repair but they sure are more dependable for the most part than 20 years ago.

It's not an evil plot and they are not idiots. First and foremost, cars are designed to be built as cheaply as possible. Servicing is down the priority list a good deal.

I do all my own work once the car is out of the warranty period. I'll be the first to admit that serviceability is not my first concern when car shopping. Price, performance and style come ahead of service issues and I suspect most people view a new car purchase the same way.
