Re: Enough with the...

Been wondering how much wind is too much. We're fairly new to boating. We bought a '92 Wellcraft Eclipse 216 a couple of years ago. We're in Western New York on Lake Erie's eastern basin. Still trying to learn the best wind direction and wind speed for boating. Last year we were in 4 - 5 foot waves and had a heck of a time controlling the boat. A few days later we were in similar conditions and actually did a lot better but it was still nerve wracking! Don't know how people do it in even rougher waters. Maybe we're just too old and cautious. We were out yesterday in 15+ mph winds from the SW and the lake was very smooth. We'll figure it out. Saw the terrible weather the Midwest has been going through. We feel for you.

Yeah the weather here has been interesting. A very harsh winter, no real spring, and now severe weather and lots of rain.

I think our sirens have only gone off 5 or so times this year. They have usually gone off 25 times by now. So if it's up there in WI, more the better as I have more time at the lake. :D Just kidding, button down and stay safe. I hate bad weather. I think it has something to do with going through 3 lightening strikes and 1 tornado as a kid. One fire from lightening kept us out of our house for several months and the tornado missed us.

I've got that same boat. I love my Eclipse! :D

We go out on Lake Winnebago which is pretty shallow (Max 20ft), so it gets a real short, sharp chop if the wind is from the wrong direction. In our case that's from the NNE. It has the length of the lake to build up.
15-25 from the SW, everythings good.:D Same wind from the NNE makes for a nasty rough ride.

Using the trim tabs, just a little, to bring the bow down, usually helps smooth out the ride. Or at least keep you from getting slammed every other wave. They also help with directional control.

Frankly, I'll take 6-8's on Lake Michigan over 3-5's on Winnebago. They get spaced out alot more and are easier to ride up and over.

bekosh, yeah we love it too. Our first boat. Very solid and stable. It's got the 5.7L Merc with TB4 ignition. 336 hours on it. Runs very strong and smooth. 6-8 ft. waves? I watch them from shore! Maybe someday.

That's made my day JB....can't stop smiling.
I recall that photo you posted for the benefit of technobullshirt way back, and the word Lone Star sort of matched your pose.
Great

obezag, Waves on Lake Michigan are spaced far enough apart that at 25-30mph you just kinda surf up and down them. It can be a little disconcerting to be sitting in your boat looking UP at the waves.;)

Of course if you really run hard, you can catch some air which makes for an interesting ride.
Here's a pic of a friend of mine, running in a Chicago poker run. The waves were running 6-10 and he was running 65+.
That's a 42ft Fountain.

Of course then there's the landing.

So what does your Eclipse run with the small block? With the 7.4l big block I hit 59.2mph with a light load, 56-58 is more normal. I'm still chasing that elusive 60.:D

dang, now that is a nice looking boat.

You will hit 60.... I think I've said before during your chase, remove anything soft or shinny and you'll make it. :D

Actually, Phil, my gate is on Whitt Circle. Whitt Circle is a short, "L" shaped road, both ends of which intersect Lonestar Road about 1/2 mile apart. As The Hideout is the only residence on Whitt Circle I am going to propose to the County that they rename it "Hideout Trail".:D

bekosh, I know I'm opening myself up to some carp but I haven't had her wide open yet! Back in the day I had a '71 Chevelle SS with the 402 and years later a '79 Honda 750 SS which was a rocket for it's time. Just not that into speed anymore. Was at 45 mph on GPS. Next time we have 6-10 footers I'll WOT her and... yeah right! Next calm day I'll quit babying her and open her up. Geez, what if I end up liking it? Gas is around $4.10 here.

Yeah, I know what you mean, $4.09-4.19 here.

I've been babying the throttle more this year than last. A lot of time at 30-35 and very little 50+.
I love the sound of the big block at full bore, but when I open her up the sucking sound of my wallet emptying drowns out the sweet sound of the engine.:(

My Wellcraft? or the Fountain?:D

The Fountain is a big beautiful boat. Makes mine look tiny. And twin 525's. OH BABY!
