I have a 1992 Merc 40 HP o/b motor which was giving me problems starting last weekend. After thirty minutes of trying to start it, I began tinkering around in the motor. Anyway, as I cranked the key over I would hear a ticking sound coming from a part of the motor which I decided to investigate for whatever reason.

The "enricher valve", I think it was, has a button underneath of it.

I decided to give the button a push while my Dad turned the key. Well low and behold, it began to turn over. After two more times of hitting the button and turning the key, it started!!!

I figure I need to replace this piece however the repair manual says that if you turn the key and hear a ticking sound, that means it is opening the valves and may not need replacing as it is doing what it should.

The other thing it says to check is to see if there is a leak in the fuel hoses that lead out of the enricher valve which may need replacing. This doesn't seem to make any sense to me since the engine turned over as I pushed the button ... and it stayed running for the rest of the day.

If it had anything to do with the fuel line then it would not have stayed on for long right? Or am I thinking its the enricher valve that I was toying with or was it something else?

Any help?

Did any one else have this problem??? Should I just go ahead and replace the enricher valve my self - seems pretty simple enough although pretty tight area to work in??

Thanks...
