Re: ESA knock???

Yes it was brand new never used and I also ordered a brand new never used hub kit.

They did confirm that I have the correct hub kit which I was pretty sure of anyways but just wanted to make sure.

I dunno what to do. Am I correct in thinking that if it is out of balance and the "fix" it it will shorten the lift of the prop?

Thanks

Re: ESA knock???

There's literally THOUSANDS of "fixed" props running there in radio land for years and years....(or at least until they whack something with them!)

Instead of sending your prop off....It would be a LOT easier to just put a different prop on it and see what happens.

Put the old one back on. Or, find another used prop locally and put it on.....

If you don't have a spare, you you need one.....

Re: ESA knock???

You must have missed my post a few back. I do have an alum 15.5X17. I put it on then the Apollo and back and forth three times.

Same thing every time. The Apollo makes the whole boat vibrate and make that knocking noise when the ESA engages. The alum prop causes no vibration and no knocking noise.

I also had a ballistic ss prop and it didn't make any vibration or knock either.

Yeah...I think I did miss that. When you have a problem that goes away with a different prop.....it sure points to the other prop doesn't it?

I am thinking it is the wrong hub or a slipping hub..... (14 spline/15spline etc?)

Re: ESA knock???

I sent the apollo off today to where I bought it from. They are only a few hours from me so it should arrive there Tom and they said it will take them less than 24 hours to check it and either fix it or send out a replacement.

I went down to a prop shop I have done business with today also. I asked them what they thought about the place fixing it and they said it should be fine. I still prefer a new one since I paid for a new one.

I also asked them if I had the right hub kit and they said I did.

So the only thing else I can think of o's that the prop is way out of balance. I guess I will find out war the place says tom or wed.

Another thing I was thinking was the hub kits thrust washer was about 1/4 smaller than the other one that goes to the alum prop.

I should have tried to see if the alum props thrust washer would have fit on the Apollo prop.

I dunno. Sucks for me though.

Re: ESA knock???

why dont you quit?????
your killing us.
some stainless props on a flusher will chatter.
simply how life is.
the real test is will it chatter in the water.
even then some props at an in gear idle will chatter, my F150 outboard will with certain props,.
the ESA should NEVER engauge unless your coming out of ANY in gear position and then ONLY for a split second.
I will repeat.
the ESA NEVER is engauged OTHER than when the shifter is moved from an in gear position to N.IF it does otherwise the shift system is broke, fix it.

That might be it, Rick. I had a V drive part that was 30 spline, a shop sold me a yoke for it that seemed to go on ok but was offset. Turned out they had given me a 31 spline yoke. The splines meshed on 1 side, met on the other, was way out of balance.

Re: ESA knock???

Quit what? Trying to rule everything out? I didn't know if there was other reasons why it could do this.

I don't run the engine on muffs. I keep the boat at a storage rack. They flush it for me. I stated in my post that I drove the boat and the whole boat vibrates pretty badly from about 1300 - 4000 rpms.

Never said anything about chatter. The sound with the ESA is IN the engine compartment and not coming from the prop. My shifter is a little loose and when i shift it slowly (don't mean to) it engages the ESA when going into gear. But if I shift it normally it doesn't. I always thought this was normal until HT32BSX115 told me otherwise.

But still it would just stumble the engine. No noise or anything.

Was just trying to get some help and make sure before sending the prop back. Though it was a good idea as I figured it was unlikely a new prop would be out of balance that bad.

Re: ESA knock???

and there we have it,

it engages the ESA when going into gear

your shift cable is toast.
fix it before you post about smoked clutch dogs and gears.
the esa is only supposed to work coming OUT of any IN gear position.
read DonS sticky about shift interrupt.
its what the OMC ESA does but its applicaple to ANY AND ALL gear sets that back cut the dogs on the gear and clutch.

biggest difference between the OMC ESA and the mercruiser.
ESA scatters the spark misfireing the engine to reduce propshaft load allowing the shift clutch to withdraw to the N position.
mercs system typically just shut off the spark.
both system do the same thing.
reduce the propshaft load.
fix it, or post about clutch dogs and the cost of antique OMC parts.

Re: ESA knock???

I understand about the shift cable and have no problem replacing it. I do have receipts from the PO's marina stating it was replaced in March. I know that doesnt mean it was but everything else that I have checked on the receipts has indeed been new.

so Im gonna check to make sure its adjusted correctly. I have the OEM manual and the print out of the entire Hastings site. Its my next project. I really think that its something to do with my shifter and/or shifter to engine cable adjustment.

My shifter is really loose from where it mounts. Depending on the way I grip it it either shifts normal (fast) and doesn't engage the ESA, or it hangs and makes me shift it slow and engages the ESA.

So Im gonna try to make some adjustments and if it doesn't work then Ill be replacing the cable.

So now that thats out of the way Back to why the prop is vibrating... JK...

Ill know tom or wed.

ESA knock??? UPDATE: "Bad casting"

ESA knock??? UPDATE: "Bad casting"

The prop place called today and said the prop was a "bad casting".

They said they sent me a new one today and they tested it first to make sure it was perfect.

Should be here tom.

That is REALLY surprising that they would let one get out like that!

I guess it happens....

You will need to check your lower shift cable or drive to see what is actually binding though. It should move easily into gear without moving the ESA actuator..... If it's not the cable, it could be a bent shift rod (#36) from someone trying to put the drive back on without having the shifter in the same gear as the drive......

ANYTHING that makes it a little harder to move the shift rod could result in the force to move the lower shift cable to be enough to activate the ESA......

A Cobra with a good lower shift cable AND everything adjusted correctly shifts (IN and OUT of gear) VERY nicely and positively............

Re: ESA knock???

Interesting...I have never had a stainless prop on my Cobra but it the ESA never engages when shifting into gear, and when shifting out you can just see the tach dip for a split second then the idle comes back up..I'd consider replacing the control box if it's giving you that trouble, but first I'd probably remove the drive see how smoothly it works when the drive is not installed...You may need a new shift cable typically they give you trouble shifting out of gear when the cable starts to get stiff...
My original OMC remote control still works smoothly even after 22 years...

Re: ESA knock???

I think I fixed it. Yes I do believe the lower shift cable ws replaced when the marina reciept says (in march) because it looks new and the other things on the reciept o have confirmed are new. I cant take the drive off where I store it. I would have to borrow a friends trailer and take the boat home. I'm looking for my own trailer anyways.

My shift cables that go from the control box to the engine were just hanging down a the way so I tied them up nice and tight. I have the original omc control box from 1989. I think it does need replaced or at least opened up and cleaned/lubed.

Ok so you know the thing that the interuptor arm sits in (i think its called a load lever) and when you shift out of gear the interuptor arm rides up out of the nothch and onto the W? *Well you know the bolt/nut that secures that W thing where the lower shift cable trunion sits in? *That nut was not tight at all. *It was very loose. *So the littlest bit of tension or force was making the load lever to move thus causing the interuptor arm to be activated.

I tightened the nut just a little bit. *Just enough so it was snug but the load lever still moved freely.

I drove the boat around the marina. I must have shifted it ten times each way and not once did the ESA engage while shifting INTO gear. *It DID still activate when coming OUT of gear.

Strange thing is the SS prop (bad casting one) looked perfect. There was noarks or weird spots on it. The only way they would have know I guess is if they tested it for balance.

I'm glad they checked the new one out before sending it to me though. They probably checked it to make sure they didn't get a whole bad batch of them.

Thanks so much for the help everyone.
