Ever left truck running and locked up?

Bet most have not done this! I was at St Mary's, GA and backed boat in water, idled over to boardwalk, walked up to truck and somehow it was locked tight. No spare key, no nothing! Even left it runnin! I have the worst luck locking keys in a vehicle. Same truck we locked keys in at a wildlife management area and there was not another soul around for 10 miles! Clothes hangers came in handy is all I will say.

My dog gets more use of the lock button than I do. I Always put the window down just in case the hide a key bounces off

Re: Ever left truck running and locked up?

Lots of trucks these days have automatic door locks that kick in when the vehicle is put into drive or reach 5 mph, and they don't unlock until the shift selector is put back into Park. I heard of a guy at our local ramp who had a newer GMC. He backed his boat down the ramp, put it in drive with the e-brake on, then hopped out to unhook his boat. Yep, door locked and window up.

As a newbie, I'm developing the habit where I always lower the window, put SUV in Park, set e-brake, turn off engine, remove the key and put it in my left pocket. So far, so good.

I had my auto locks trip on a parking garage roof (top level parking is not covered). Got out of the car to scrape the ice and snow off the windows temp was in the 20's snow blowing all over. Locks tripped as I closed the door with the car running. 40 minutes later the locksmith had her open. Sure was toasty in there, I was freezing.

Re: Ever left truck running and locked up?

There was a guy who did that in the parking lot next to where I work. I called the locksmith for him as he was from off. The locksmith showed up in about 10 minutes, opened the door for the guy in about 10 seconds and told him it would be $60. I think the guy was from NJ (sounded like it anyway) and he went nuts about the fee. The locksmith stood there listening to this guy rant for about 30 seconds and then interrupted him and said "you think it's too much money?" the guy said "yeah..." and started ranting again. The locksmith said "no problem", threw the guy's keys back into the car (which was still running), locked the door, shut it and left. The guy ended up calling another locksmith, waited an hour, and still paid $60 (but he was quiet the second time :D)...

I also roll down one window...

That is one of the funniest things I have heard, read today... I needed it after the long work day I've just had.
That 1st locksmith DEFINITELY could have been from 'Jersey. Having grown up in Jersey myself I know that we do think differently than the rest of the world. It isn't that we don't have a sensitive side we Jerseyites just don't care or have time to listen to crazy people, most of our families are crazy enough for us!!!

I agree with the locksmith. There was no need to argue with the customer so leave it like it was before you got there.:D

I always launch/pull the boat with the windows rolled down for safety and to hear when the exhaust pipe is touching the water. This would have solved the problem, but I guess it also might invite thieves.

I have a spare (valet) key electrical taped to an inconspicuous area under the vehicle; wiring harness, suspension, etc. It's out of sight and not going to fall off like a hide-a-key, but accessible in an emergency situation.

I agree, I learned to have a spare key. My Jeep I have now has remote built in key. Have to get a plain spare made for it. I learned very fast!!

My kids momma has done it a few times. I did it only once and that conviced me of having a spare in my wallet.

Re: Ever left truck running and locked up?

Same here...one time was all it took to convince me to carry a spare in my wallet.
I was at school, and had to run into a classroom to get some equipment. The door to the classroom was about ten feet away from the road. I pulled up and parked (in a red zone no less, but it was after the semester was over), put my flashers on, hopped out and ran into the classroom, grabbed my equipment, took it out to the still running car...crap, the doors are locked! A cop finally came by about 45 minutes later and used his slim jim to open it up.

Re: Ever left truck running and locked up?

Funny i replied to this thread about 2 weeks ago.
Came up to the boat launch last weekend and had about 5 boats waiting to go in. Like wow i said. never seen this before. So i pull off to the side and start getting ready. Guy walks by and said it's going to be a while. Guy locked his keys in his ford on the ramp. HUH I said. So i walked down to a lot of upset people. boat on the trailer in the water truck running, and she's not going anywhere. someone called a "Friend" but was going to be about 45 min. Yea ok i'm not waiting. Went to my truck and pulled out my lockout kit and walked down to the truck and unlocked it before they knew what was going on. Older f150's are easy. big cheers and ye ha's. Guy couldn't believe it and offered me some cash. NAA I said, I just want to go fishing.... Just Get a spare key for next time I said as i walked away....

Then I caught some fish.. It was a good day. :D
