I just purchased a 17' sea ray, came with EVERSTART, deep cylce 24DC-6 75/100 battery.

What do you think of this battery? How much distilled water do you add, it look fairly dry. Won't hold a charge, tried to charge earlier, heard bubbling and checked water. Needs to be added.

Being you don't know how old it is just replace it. Cheap insurance from getting stranded.

Re: Everstart Battery

Why fuss with it if it won't hold a charge? You can't fix it so get a new one. If this is a starting battery, get a marine starting battery, not a deep cycle. Deep Cycles are for trolling motors. Combination Deep Cylcle/Marine Starting are also available.

Re: Everstart Battery

Right, but to answer your 2nd question - add just enough water to cover the plates - water level should be just up to the bottoms of the holes. Add water & charge. Wait four hours. Get a hydrometer at the car parts store & test each cell. If one or more cells measures +/- 30 points from the others, the battery is toast. If it's below 1250 or so it's starting to go downhill. 1200 or below, it's history.

But an old battery can test ok and still not hold a charge. If you have doubts you can take it to a car parts store for a load test - most do 'em for free.

Re: Everstart Battery

Is it yellow? The yellow ones are a combo battery. They are available at Walmart, very good batteries for the money. I have the group 27 as my trolling battery and will buy a 24 when it's time for a new starter.

Don't forget to take your dead battery in when you go to buy new. If you don't exchange you get charged $10. That's how it works here in MN anyway.

Re: Everstart Battery

I use an Everstart Marine Maxx (the yellow one) Group 31 battery. They are dual purpose, so I only use the one.

Never let me down. Run the positioning motor all day, start the engine even if it has been flooded and has to crank and crank and crank. . ..

You can probably buy a better battery for double the price, but why?

Only problem I ever had was lifting that big sucker over the gunnel in the spring and fall. :)

This topic belongs in Electrics, so I will move it there.

Re: Everstart Battery

I've got the same BYB (Big Yellow *******) of a battery. I always seem to manage to "release a little gas" whenever I lift that thing over the gunnel. This is after carrying it about 100yds from the parking area with it's smaller Group 24 (starter) sibling. One of these days it's going to end up underneath our dock.

Why oh why didn't I just get an on-board charger?!

LOL
