I posted earlier about removing my powerhead to access an upper mount. I started digging into this within other posts and realized that the mounts are rubber right? Yeah I know..DERR.. But I had a question.. Is there a metal rod inside the upper mount that takes the bolts?? Is that piece solid? or is it just rubber with ears on it?

I'm asking becasue I have play. I can wiggle the engine and it moves a good bit. My boat mechanic already told me they were shot and recommended that I do not take the boat off the dock..he said its not safe..is that 100% true??
Also, I wasnt sure if the rubber is junk or the (i think) metal rod that is sandwiched in the rubber broke..it it is even one piece..

Just want to get a picture of one of these (not an exploded view of the midsection) but an actual pic of this to give me a better understanding of how this mount actually works..

I am at your mercy! Please help!

Did you do the work yourself?.. I think I will be attempting it pretty soon..as i understand it the head must come off.. ughh

When you say the lowers are a bear... how big of a bear? It looks like removing the zinc would allow the lowe mounting plate to just slide away some... what should i expect??

The lower mounts are not that bad if you know a trick or two. Actually not a big deal at all.
Once you get the powerhead off and look at the upper don't be surprised if it's OK. Let us know what you find.

Thumbnail shows it, click it please.

BTW, If the steering arm nut is loose at the bottom, it can sometimes feel like that.

Very well could be. Not common for them to go bad.

Re: Evinrude 140HP UPPER MOUNTS

My lower mount were fused into the lower unit. After all those years the corrosion bonded to the rubber, I ended up cutting them carefully and pry them out. The power head on mine had some stubborn bolts, I didn't want to break them so I had to work them out slowly. My motor is a saltwater motor, so nothing was easy.

To pull the power head, I dropped the lower unit, removed the 6 long bolts and 7 short bolts and or nuts. I used an engine hoist and lifted the motor off. then I had to remove the upper bolts to the mount, again corrosion was my enemy. After that was a matter of installing the new mounts and reassemble.

ezeke...the picture was huge..Thank YOU! The nut you speak of..on the steering.. thats the one under the lower mount bracket right?.. I'm asking beacause where the spacer on the column is before the lower mount plate looks like it came down a 1/6th or 1/8 of an inch.. could that be what is making this feel like the mounts are shot??..

Paw.. my engine was rebuilt in 2003.. I wouldnt think mounts would go that quickly if they ever do,,and I am crossing my fingers that the corrossion is minimal..

So do you guys have any opinions about mounts..upper or lower.. is this something that requires maintenance or replacement?.. just wondering before i go pulling powerheads off..

Guys... how firm should the engine feel on the mounts..anyway. I have never paid too much attention to it till now.. should if feel super solid? or have some give?

mine moves a good amount and feels almost spongy if that makes sense...

Re: Evinrude 140HP UPPER MOUNTS

Were the mounts replaced when it was rebuilt? I can only speak of my situation, mine had a bad lower splined block, the bolts broke in the lower mounts forcing me to replace them, the upper on mine sagged, again 25yrs of hard life. I'm at the Jersey shore and the salt kills everything.

The paperwork said so... but I never put my eyes on it..so I honestly cant say for sure..7 years seems short, but then again..it the guy who did the rebuild didnt chage anything then we are talking 24 yrs...
