Evinrude 150, 1996, effect of missing reverse thrust washer?

I'm resealing my 1996 Evinrude 150 outboard gearcase from water intrusion after years of good service. Upon disassembly I discovered it is missing the warple thrust washer that is located in FRONOT of the reverse gear. While I understand this is likely the cause of some excessive shaft endplay (.020-.030), could this missing thrust washer also be a contributing factor in causing this gearcase to very touchy in having enough throw in the controls to get the gearcase to go completly into BOTH forward and reverse fully?

I've already changed the shifter cables, pivot screws, bushings, washers etc in trying to make the engagement better, but since I've owned this motor for 6 years, it has always been touchy in getting it to fully engage. As you adjust for a better forward engagement you get a worse reverse engagement and vise versa. I've been able to live with it by working the control handle back and forth and snapping it into gear, as you should. With the intrusion of water into the gearcase, it made the gear oil thick and more difficult to slide into gear of course. I also discovered corrosion behind the two O-rings seals for the shifter rod, which made the shift rod slide very difficult. I will be fixing that problem now, so I expect that to help as well.

But I don't know whether to order the thrust washer and wait for reassembly. I will wait if this is believed to be a contributing factor to the shifting problem.

By the way, I am not talking about the thrust washer and thrust bearing to the REAR of the reverse gear, but rather the thin warble thrust washer in FRONT of the reverse gear.

Thank you.

Interesting question. I will be interested in the expert's answer.

Is there play in the shift linkage as well? That will certainly cause the issue you have.

The only play is that from new cables. All joints and connections are a perfect fit.
