Hi i recently acquired a boat with a 1989 Evinrude tracker xp pro 150 hp model : te150slcem the last owner said that the smaller red wire that comes off of the starter solenoid had caught fire and melted . the wire has been replaced and so have the battery wires just to be safe . when we would turn the key the starter would pop up and engage the fly wheel but it would only turn it about 1/8 of a turn then it would stop and either get stuck in the up position or just come back down. any sorry about rambling but my main issue is i am not getting any spark at any of my plugs i was just looking for guidance on where i should start looking and what you guys think the issue might be.
battery has been load tested an is good
thank you

Can you turn the flywheel with a socket? If it only turs an 1/8 of a turn, your not going to get any spark. You need to make sure you dont have a froze-up cylynder.

Re: Evinrude 150 hp no spark

I doubt your problem is with no spark, and more with the starter not cranking properly. You wont get any spark if you're not getting at least 250 RPM.

Try doing a voltage drop test to determine if/where there is resistance in your circuit.

First set your DVM to the 20 Volt scale

Put your POS voltmeter lead on the battery POS terminal and the voltmeter NEG lead on the large incoming solenoid/battery terminal post and give her juice. If the meter reads more than .3 volts, the battery cable is bad, corroded or you have a faulty connection (loose).

Next, connect the POS lead to the incoming large solenoid post and the NEG lead to the outgoing large solenoid post while giving her juice. If the voltmeter reads greater than .2 volts, the solenoid is bad, corroded or has a faulty connection.

Next, connect the POS lead to the outgoing large solenoid post and the negative voltmeter lead to the starter positive post and give her juice. A reading of over .2 volts indicates faulty wiring between the solenoid and the starter.

Finally, connect the NEG lead to the NEG battery post and the POS lead to the engine block and crank the engine. A reading greater than .3 volts indicates a faulty negative cable, corrosion or a faulty connection.

Let us know what you find.

Roger that Chris ,
I will do the tested that you said and get back to you with the results
i think my starter finally met its doom probably from me craning it to much not it does nothing or just spins in place but usually nothing .
:( anyway my buddy that owes me a favor has a brand new one for me but i wont get it for a few days will i need to do anything to it before installing like lube up the pole that the little gear rides up on? sorry im not sure if i should start a new post or if its already been written about i did a search but didn't find what i was looking for. anyway
Chris can i do the tests you said without the starter or should i wait till its here?
thanks alot guys your full of knowledge thanks for sharing !

If you were getting battery voltage (12.65 volts) while cranking at the starter and it was not functioning as it should, it was the likely culprit. May be a simple rebuild inside, I would not chuck it out.

Re: Evinrude 150 hp no spark

Ok so i finally got around to testing the cables and they were all within the standards that you said they needed to be within although doing detailed inspection of the battery cables i can tell that they need to be replaced . my local outboard shop for some reason does not carry the battery cables but they insist that i can use Auto battery cables i told them i dont feel comfortable using them and left . I dont think ill be back again. anyway are they right to tell people that they can use car ones seems like the point of marine cables exisiting is because they are designed to take the extra exposure to water and the elements better. i didnt get a chance to try the new starter out since i had to go to work but tomorrow is the big day to see if the motor starts!
thank you

Hey Guys !!Great news the outboard is once again running like a champ but i have another issue is it best to start a new post or keep asking my questions here?
thank you guys for the help
turned out my issue was a combination of the kill switch being installed wrong and the starter not turning the flywheel fast enough in casue someone was wondering
thank you again!!
