I have a blown 1986 Evinrude 150hp motor. I was looking up some prices and was wondering if $77 was reasonable for one piston? Also do the rings come included with it? What is a reasonable price for boring cylinders?

Shaun, If you change 1 piston you will create an imbalance in your compression. Usually the blocks are bored then sleeved to keep a single piston at the same diameter as the other 5. I am sure you can get the work done at a reasonable price however you might want to see what is available on the used market. I would suggest rebuilding the entire powerhead if you want to keep the motor. Rings are "normally" sold in sets.

Weigh out the investment versus what the motor is worth. Retail on an 86 150hp is in the area of $850-900. A rebuilt power head for your motor is in the $2200 range. Doing the rebuild yourself and just repairing the single piston MAY keep it running for a while depending on the use. Call around, e-mail just contact people who do specific marine powerhead work. There are probably some on this site.

Bob

Re: Evinrude 150 HP Questions

Actually what the problem is when i took it apart i found out that the guy who had it before me had two of the 6 cylinders .030 over. So i wanna get them all the same now. I also felt that the imbalance caused this problem in the first place. I wanna get it done right this time so i can get more then a year or so out of it. I was looking for parts and i found wiseco pistons for $77 a piece and was wondering if the rings and wrist pin came with the set. Also I wanted to know a reasonable price for boring cylinders. Thanks for the reply!!!

Re: Evinrude 150 HP Questions

In a 2-stroke outboard, it is a common practice (and accepted/approved by the manufacturers) to only bore and replace the cylinders that need it. Balance is not the issue it is in a 4-stroke or automotive engine. You will not see a variation in conmpression on a rebuild with less than all cylinders bored. Resleeving will add to your rebuild cost, if you go that route. In our area a GOOD machine shop gets $50/cylinder to bore & hone (we usually do the finish honing).

You should contact Wiseco or their distributor to find out what comes with a piston.

What cylinder failed and how was the piston damaged? It's important to find out why it failed or it could happen again. Look at the cooling system, carbs (meticulously clean them and install new kits), don't forget to check the ignition system for a potential "double firing".

-John

Re: Evinrude 150 HP Questions

Hi Shaun,
I'll have to agree with John from Il. I've mixed and matched piston on a lot of engines, and havn't noticed any ill effects.
Yes wisco pistons do come with a new wrist pin,and rings. I think that $77 is reasonable(also new cerclips for the wrist pin)
If the engine failed try to find the reason for the failure,or you may be p***ing in the wind. John had very good suggestions, also get a good shop manual.
Only my 2 cents worth
