I'm working on the leg and it had been removed from the engine before I got it. Everything is supposed to be here except that the bearing about half way up on the vertical shaft shaft is toast. I can see how the bearing rides on the shaft but not at all sure of how things go together above the bearing. Questions:

Does the top of the bearing just ride against the frame of the leg or is there some kind of a locking system that is between the bearing and the frame.

Where does the water pump sit in the scheme of things - just above the bearing or is it towards the motor.

The impeller is new but is larger than the water pump opening that it fits into. Do the fins get folded so that it fits tightly into the pump housing? It will fit this way but seems strange to me.

I'm following the diagrams - showing piece by piece - on the Evinrude site but I'm missing the "big picture" in terms of how things work on the upper shaft.

Re: Evinrude/1970/Model 115083D

What I have learned so far. This bearing is pressed into the bearing housing and it is not easy to get out - even with a bearing puller. The seals on top of the gear housing are really two - gasket-goo'd back to back and within two small metal rings and each has an O ring . I punched them out from the inside out with what I thought was a reasonably good thin walled socket. Not a good idea. The metal frames were very tight so the inside metal piece took a bit of a roughing up and the seals themselves were mangled. The top-most metal ring came out intact. Probably easy enough to get replacement frames and seals and they will probably press in much better than they came out. The next job is to get the existing bearing out. - probably at a machine shop.
