Thanks that will work. Now next up how do I get the copper tub from the water pump out I think it may have holes in it.

Do you mean the copper tube (319281) coming down from the powerhead?

There's a hole in that tube to cool the exhaust housing.

If for some reason you decide to change that tube, you need to pull the powerhead and fully disassemble the midsection.

here's what it looks like on a '75 with the external exhaust housing removed.

Re: evinrude 1982 70hp

ok now I am puzzled. I relokated thr telltale to the top of the head. I have the lower unit off, A hose clamped to the copper tube that goes to the water pump. The trermastat cover off and no valeves installed. I get a good stream of water from the tell tale but no water from the hole behind where the T-stat goes. Is that normall or do I still hace a clog some where.

Re: evinrude 1982 70hp

If I understand your cooling circuit correctly, water enters the block from the exhaust manifold, passes through the block and into the top-of the inner cylinder head (where your tell-tale now is). water exits the inner cyl head through the bottom and sits in the outer cyl head until the t-stat opens.

It sounds like you have a blockage in the cylinder head.

Did you install the tell tale with the head removed? It makes a crap-load of shavings....maybe they got washed down and formed a plug?

Was your impeller & intake screen intact when you 1st serviced it?

probably stating the obvious, I definitely wouldn't run the engine until you get it figured out. you're doing a really good job troubleshooting!

Well I got the head cover off and there was a big clog at the bottom. I still am not getting water. Where can I get a water flow diagram for this motor. I hate to pull the head, the motor runs to good.

cool...would've loved to seen a picture of that  what sort of debris was in the clog?

you have water to the tell-tale (top of the head)...correct?

but no flow to the bottom of the head...correct?

Yes no water comming at the bottom of thr head. I didn't get pics but the clog was salt water corrosion. Should water be comming out of one of the 2 holes at the bottom of the head?

There are 4 holes in the bottom of the head...2 entering the outer cylinder head from the inner cylinder head water passage...and the 2 round lower-most holes for water exiting the cylinder head cover (when the t-stat &/or pressure relief valves open).

Note: this is from a '75 70Hp

Thanks. Now that I know how it flows. I took the tell tale fitting out and mixed up some salt away and squirted it in. I am going to let it sit till I get off work and try and flush it out. Hopefully in 2 or 3 days I can get it flushed out. If I get water flowing I will put the lower unit back on. Then mix up some salt away in a barrol and run it monitering the head temp. At least 3 or 4 times.

BlueFin

Thanks for all the help. I bit the bullit and pulled the head. The bottom half of the head and block was caked with salt corrosion. The pistons and cylinders look good. My motor looks the same as yours. Do you happen to have the torque specs and order for the head.
