Thanks for all the help. I bit the bullit and pulled the head. The bottom half of the head and block was caked with salt corrosion. The pistons and cylinders look good. My motor looks the same as yours. Do you happen to have the torque specs and order for the head.

My pleasure! I'm glad that you decided to pull the head...this way you'll be sure you get all of that crud out of both sides of the head.

18-20 ft-lbs on the head bolts in the following order:
17>18
13>14
7>8>9>10
1>2
6<5<4<3
12<11
16<15

(the cylinder head cover uses 1/4-20's...only torque those to 65-80 inch-pounds)

make sure the surfaces are clean...an Irwin razor blade and lacquer thinner work great.

After cleaning off the gasket residue, I dress the head using emery cloth taped to a boat windshield

lastly, these gaskets probably don't require sealer...if they're sticky, shiny and/or marked "Do Not Use Sealer", install as-is.

Retorque the head after a few heating/cooling cycles.

Well it runs good and cool but I hav gas running out of the middle carb soo I gues it is time for a carb rebuild. Is there eny way to tell what year a motor is besides the transum glamp. By part # I think this might be older than 82.

Do you mean the copper tube (319281) coming down from the powerhead?

There's a hole in that tube to cool the exhaust housing.

Whoa, glad I read this thread. I was about to ask about that exact hole I see in mine. Good thing I kept the JB Weld holstered!

Awesome job!! :thumb: Don't forget to re-torque those head bolts (loosen / torque 1 at a time).

Hopefully the drippy-carb is just the needle not seating.

I bet everyone panics the 1st time they see that hole

ok I took the carb's apart and thay were pritty clean except for some crude in the float bowl down by the high speed jet. Turned the carb that was leaking upside down and could not blow through the inlit. cleand it all up soaked in carb cleaner with jets out. blew throu all passige ways. reasembled and put gas in pump oil can and can't get it to leak. how much pressure does the fuel pump put out.

I use a tool designed to tension the cable ties.

I bought one at harbor freight but it doesn't pull tight enough. Where can I get one?

I bought mine from an aircraft tool supply house many years ago.
Is the tool you have a plastic one, could not get one of those to pull tight enough.
What type of cable ties are you using, omc makes them, but I use a high quality tie that will pull to a high pressure before it breaks.

I use a pair of pliars + a pair of needle nose with the OMC wire-ties and haven't had any problems with leaks.

The pliers have a small opening that allows the wire-tie to pass but does not allow the the "stopper" to pass...then I take a pair of needle-nose pliers and rotate (tag-end of wire-tie wraps around the needle nose) it so that it pulls the wire-tie tag end tight against the pliers...rotate until I hear a few clicks.

Re: evinrude 1982 70hp

Parts book calls for 5/32" fuel line.

That wouldbe from carb to carb. Fuel bump to middle carb is much larger. I asume it needs to be 5/16" id. My motor turns out to be around 1975 not 1982 asthe title says. Some one changed the transum mount at some time in iy's life So I had the wrong model #

Sorry, I didn't read the post correctly, I think you are correct that it needs to be 5/16" fuel line.

^^ +1 Daviet. carb-to-carb (PN 333387, 0333387) is 5/32"

pump-to-carb (PN 0333395 or 0320572) is 5/16" ID

Re: evinrude 1982 70hp

Did you by any chance get the worm gear type clamp from Walmart? Cuz those things are garbage! I have snapped too many to count. Get a quality clamp of the correct size. To large and it just won't work.
