Is the starter turning the engine over too slow? You can probably pull the starter apart and give it a good clenaning and lube the bushings. Had to do this on my Force 120's atleast one a year. My '88 J225 has a "new" starter or so I was told on it. It sounds like crap and will get torn down and gone over very soon. I've always gone to a local rebuilder I trust and had my original rebuilt by them. Nice to have a warranty.

Does it turn over slow?

Does it turn over fine, just won't fire off?

A dealer should be able to get parts.

A hard starting condition could be any number of things. You have to start with the basics depending on the problem being electrical, mechanical, fuel, or ignition related.

Any Evinrude dealer can look up and order any part you need for that starter. At minimum, you will probably need a brush set and a lower cap and bushing assy. Make sure that the starter drive (Bendix) is not slipping and causing the motor to crank over too slowly.

Re: Evinrude 225 starting

I am having the exact same problem: 2001 Evinrude 225 HP fitch. It turns over slowly and will not start, no spark to the plugs. (battery is fine, 1000 amp new).

Checked all connections, clean, tight. If this is the starter, can I rebuild this one or some other way refurbish or is it wise to buy new. If I choose to rebuild what should I know? How can I test? What to look for to rebuild parts?? Any help would be appreciated.

Re: Evinrude 225 starting

Cheaper in the long run to install a new starter, I have had customers get these starters rebuilt and 90 percent had to have armature end turned down and different bushing installed in the end cap and brushes. This is usually 1/2 the price of a new starter and only has a 60 day warranty.

After throwing away $40 to a place that rebuilds starters who said he cleaned it up and turned it down the starter still turned slow and would not stRt the engine. Wound up Replacing the starter ($267). Live & Learn!
