Evinrude 25 Loud Exhaust

I just purchased a late eighties Evinrude 25. It is extremely loud and there are signs of exhaust on the shaft at the bottom of the steering hinge, above the waterline. This leads me to beleive that the exhaust is exiting there and not through the prop. <br /><br />Any suggestions?

You could have a bad gasket between the powerhead and lower unit. Run with the cover off and see if you can find where. It's not an expensive repair but you do need to pull the powerhead.
