I am replacing the seals and bearings on my lower unit and found something not in the parts catalog. I got the driveshaft seal out and there is a washer or something between the seal and the bearing. I don't see getting it out without damaging it and there is no parts no. to replace it. The bearing is gritty and since I bought the bearing I would like to put in the new one. Also are there any tricks to getting the shift bushing out?

Not sure what washer you are talking about. Unless you mean the fish line guard on the prop shaft. Well anyhow, I used to make the tool for removing the shift rod seal, but discontinued it. You can see an alternate way of removing it on my website, www.franksoutboardtools.com

don't know why there would be a washer between the seal and the top of the d/s bearing...did you find a thrust washer between the pinion gear and housing where the d/s slides into the pinion gear?...shift bushing removal...some folks modify a spade bit and drive them out...some folks tap a couple threads in from the top and pull them out..F_R, forum member, makes,or did make, a stepped stainless rod that is used to drive them out which works just as designed on several of the lower hp. models including the 25 hp. of your vintage...one note when you replace that shift rod seal, slide the shift rod into place and as you set the bushing depth slide the shift rod in and out until you feel it is starting to bind. Be cautious if setting the bushing any deeper as it doesn't take much to have so much friction it's difficult to move the shift rod

It wasn't a washer, it was the unit housing. it threw me off by the way it looked "stamped". I really like the threaded method. Helps in making a slide hammer puller. I should have thought about using a rawl bolt setup that I used to remove my motorcycles wheel bearings to get the d/s bearing out. thanks for the help.
