To clarify, we are talking about the aluminum tube, approx 1 inch in diameter with and o-ring on each end which surrounds the drive shaft. Not the copper water tube which carries cooling water. Anybody want a picture, e-mail me at gatorsnfrogs@verizon.net and I'll send it to you.

That Tube only goes up a little ways and doesn't conect to anything. Is it safe to assume there might be a rot hole up above in the shaft allowing the exhaust to leak over to the wrong side?

Am I right in saying there is no ehhaust tube that goes from the perwehead into this tube? It is just a separate section of the shaft?

I'm leaning towards plugging the two holes. I woul dthink any water buildup would leak out through the prop? Maybe I'm wrong. this thing is driving me crazy not being able to fix it.

"That Tube only goes up a little ways and doesn't conect to anything" So earlier you said it is a long shaft motor. If it was converted from short shaft and whoever did it left the short shaft tube in there it wouldn't connect to anything. The long shaft uses a 5" longer tube. I've told you not to plug the holes. Now go ahead and do whatever you want....you will anyway.

johnny, like FR said earlier in the post, if you plug those holes water will find it's way up the drive shaft tube and into the engine block and destroy it........the fix is probaly quite simple to keep the engine alive

Re: Evinrude 35HP too many exhaust ports?

I looked inside there and there is nothing it connects to???

It just stubs up and goes nowhere. I don't see anything coming down from the powerhead. What was it mad from? could it have rotted away?

I highly doubt I'll be able to buy a replacement for a 1976 outboard. I'll probably have to have something fabricated???

I appreciate the help. I won't plug the holes, an engineer put them there for a reason and you guys verified it. Now I just need to try to find the part. I don't see a part number on either of these breakdowns?? Just the stub out of the pump housing.

You guys are amazing. This is a terrific site. I think without this site I would have brought this engine to the metal pile with my frustration.

Thanks everyone for the help!

Re: Evinrude 35HP too many exhaust ports?

The part number I need is 0386930 and it changed to 0391458. Neither one is avalable! No what?

Can I rig a section of copper tubing from the rubber seal on the housing up and into the base of the ehaaust housing? or do I just leave it alone and make a flap to cover and divert the ehaust gasses down and away?

I'm kind of stuck here now. I know what's wrong but the engine is 30 years old and no more parts???? I would think a section of copper tubing would possibly do it as long as I came close to the right size??

Re: Evinrude 35HP too many exhaust ports?

Correct me if I'm wrong but this slips over the drive shaft and simply seals out the water from going up correct?

I have it torn apart and now have a better understanding.

I really appreciate the help. You guys are pros. my expertise is with tractors- Kubota, wheel horse and Deere. if I can ever help you just let me know!

the holes in the tube are to release water, the parts you need and are ordering are to keep exhaust from excaping from the shaft tube

Re: Evinrude 35HP too many exhaust ports?

It's funny how this drove me nuts and all along it was as simple as an exhaust leak. Someone must have serviced the engine and left that tube off for what ever reason.

The engine ran great when moving along fast but not so great when I backed it down. The high speed blew the exhaust that was expelled through those holes back.

Thanks again for the help.

Re: Evinrude 35HP too many exhaust ports?

at high rpm's it was probably pumping enough water to create enough back pressure on the exhaust,
and like F.R. mentioned earlier someone may have extended the shaft length and just did not do it right
