Re: Evinrude 4
Thanks everyone , I'll start with checking the shear pin first then compression at the same time look for that shift lever . I'll post back once I checked all of those. Anything else I need to check?
As said there should be a gear lever on the right hand side (your left as you look at it) This motor has forward and neutral but no reverse gear.
Check the prop dive pin but I think this one also has a rubber bushed drive which could have failed ... but they usually drive at low speed but then slip when you open up.
I dont think there is a cooling water tell tale so check that some water is blown out of the back-pressure relief port on the back of the exhaust housing below the clamp bracket.
Also check that it does not overheat.
If in doubt renew the water pump impeller.
Check/change the gear case oil. It should be "clear and bright". If it is milky, or there is water in the gear case, it indicates leaky seals which will have to be replaced
Fit new seals to the gearcase fill/drain and level plugs when you change the oil (O rings I think in this model)
If it starts easily and idles well I'd not suspect any compression problems but always worth a check esp if you have or can borrow a tester.
BTW the fuel mix is 50:1 gasoline

il. Even if there are decals that say 100:1
The first thing you should do is get an owners manual. That will show you how it should all operate and the basic maintenance tasks.
