Hi how would one figure out the year of a 40 horse evinrude on here? Model number AM-40A it is army surplus, has the older style (manuel shift) lower end with the exhaust seperate. Local OMC man said they went to the newer exhaust thru-the-prop style in the 70's but the army tag lists it as a 1981...any help?
Thanks again!
Craig
PS it sure is a beaut! appears to have VERY few hours :D , even looks like the origional grease job.

Re: evinrude 40 horse year?

Hi Craig
Sorry I can't help with that number. How ever there are many late commercial model engines that are built as you describe. I do have a list for commercial motors, of course yours wasn't on it. I suspect the reason is the milatary connection. There is probably a list somewhere of milatary model #s. I would tend to belive the 1981 as correct. This can be a real pain when ordering parts. All parts are available and most dealers have them in stock. The problem lies in the comunication. So take your parts with you. I beleive the reason for commercial models is comman service parts. Lets say you run a resort and have 30 outboards in sizes ranging 10 to 35 hp. All your common service parts would be the same. One water pump would fit them all, etc.
