We took the old 14ft Sears alum. w/74 25HP Johnson out yesterday, that old motor will run for ever just keep gas and oil in it, sometime high tech is a pain in the rear.

Mine's actually a 40hp too, i mistyped. and a 91. and everything you said was happening was happening to me also I would have to hit the choke to keep it running. I'd say it's the thermostat. It fixed mine.

Would one of the experts please jump in here? Is it possible for an outboard to run fine for half an hour, then lose power and require primer/choking to run due to "overcooling"?!? <br />I don't doubt that a new thermostat cured chpowell's problems, but I'm interested in learning how. Overcooling???

Well,I am not an expert,but I had the exact same symptoms with my '76 35hp Johnson.<br /> I also changed tank, hoses,fuel pump,carby gaskets,etc,etc,etc.<br /> The condensers were my problem. I,too would go fine for 1/2 hr,then the same surging would start.<br /> I know every problem is different...But my new $7 condensers fixed the crap that I spent $250 chasing !!!<br /><br /> GOOD LUCK !!

Hello, I just got back from the lake and the motor is running great. I ran it for about 3.5 to 4 hrs total and no problems. I think it was the thermostat causing the problem all along. I always thought that the motor wasn’t get up to the correct temperature. Thanks everyone, especially chpowell .
