Evinrude 48 SPL Power Tilt Recommendations?

A couple questions if you don't mind fellows.

I just purchased a 1991 Skeeter SD-80 with a 1988 Evinrude 48 on it. It has a manual tilt, which is harder than heck to tilt up and down out of the water. Any recommendations on installing a power tilt system? I've seen a few here on this site, but I don't really know what I'm looking at. Also, on a stock 48 SPL, shouldn't it have some type of assist shock, cylinder, something to ease the pain of lifting the thing up and down? It doesn't seem to have anything, or at least it doesn't feel like it!

On a different subject, I'm looking for any links to general boating operating instructions, etc. This is my first outboard boat (my other fishing boat only had a trolling motor), so any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Search the Johnson/Evinrude forum for a post by (I think) Gil about adjustment of a manual tilt trim slave cylinder. There should be something that looks like a shock absorber or bottle jack in the area between the lower unit and transome mounts. Not sure if your '88 came with one or not, but that post will shed some light on the topic.

The other alternative is an aftermarket power tilt/trim unit - you mount the unit on the transom, then mount your motor on the unit. Look in the Mega Mall, they have them there.

Thanks for the information. I'm still looking for any recommendations on an aftermarket tilt mech. THanks.

Bombardier has an accessory TNT. Don't know the PN but any Evinrude dealer can look it up. The 48 spl did not have any kind of assist.
You could add any of the smaller power tilt and trim units by CMC or Panther. These devices bolt on the transom and the engine bolts to the bracket. Check out Bass Pro shops, Overtons or Cabela's

Big Hare - Thanks for the info. I didn't think the 48 SPL had an assist, because the darn thing is heavy, heavy, heavy.

There's a Bass Pro under construction in our area, but it's not ready yet. I've read about the CMC units, and they seem to be a reasonable choice. Any insight on how I'd go about adding a tach to my motor? I can't believe it doesn't have one! Thanks again.

Go online to the BPS and Cabelas. You need a 5 pulse tack - I think. Your remote control might have a plug under the key switch but also there is a grey tach lead somewhere under the dashboard. All of the evinrude wire harness have a tach connection at the dashboard end.

Big Hare,

Thanks a million. There is a connection on the OMC control just below the key. It is a three-pin connector, and I bet a tach would plug into it. I'm going to get this boat right one way or another. Again, I appreciate the help!
