aloha everyone,

just recently boat a new boat. it has a evinrude 48 spl on it. I am trying to find the year for it. The previous owner told me the motor was an 88 model year. however after trying to find parts for it and crossreferencing crowely marine diagrams i first thought it was an 89, no biggy he was just a year off. Now after troubleshooting a rectifier problem, tach not working. I thought hey why not see how much a new power pack was. This is when i relized the current power pack installed is off a 94 model. There are no S/N stamped on port side of transom and the model number sticker has only a little piece remaining. There is a 93 stamped in a circle on port transom mount and I am assuming this might be the year, but not sure.

here are some numbers i have found stamped on the motor. was wondering if any of you might know if they are the S/N.

Stamped on stbd transoms bracket top #18983228jsi, stamped on what looks like a small upside down freezeplug on top of power head is #g336475

Hopeing to get this "rectified" ordered a new rectifier for an 89 and hopeing it will work. i also just ordered a eng manual for pre '90 motors which might have to go back now. dooh.

thanks in advance

Re: evinrude 48 spl question

One way to help ID the engine is power pack location. Used to on side of block, then was moved to under the flywheel.

Diagrams show it under the flywheel before '94 then on side of block starting there after. That and the stamp on transom is why I'm thinking it's a '94 just not sure.

Ok so my new rectifier should get here today. The one I ordered was for a '89 the '94 has a different par number, but both are 4 wire. I assume they just have a different voltage or amp range. If I install the '89 rectifier would it cause any problems?

The stamp has a g number but nothing that looks like a model number. It is remote start.
