hi all,
i got running an 80s model evinrude model #50303R serial #89943, have run it around a fair bit for 20 mins at a time however i am unsure if its pumping water. there are 2 slits on the back of the upper leg that appear to be exhaust ports however i dont think there is water coming from here. is there supposed to be a telltale? the engine sits pretty low in the water on this particular boat so am hoping there is another exit port for circulating water that i am not seeing. i think the heat alarm is disconnected so better safe than sorry any help much appreciated, also if anyone has a similar model do they know which wire should go to that choke/primer looking solenoid.. thanks in advance!

Re: evinrude 50hp pumping water?

I have an '81 50 and it does have a tell tale, those slits are exhaust relief ports and I believe they should have a small amount of water coming out.

Mine is tapped into the block on the starter side and the hose runs to the starboard rear corner standing behind the engine.

When was the last time the water pump was changed, if it has been more than 3-4 years it needs done and I wouldn't run this engine more than 2-3 minutes at a time until this is figured out, 20 is WAY to long with no water.

Just checked my manual and the solenoid wire is purple/white.

I ahd to rewire my entire engine since the sheathing on original wires was starting to crack and short out, I suggest you so the same adn get your temp warning working(!!!!!) they cost $10-$15 adn sould save your engine, by the time you figure out it is overheationg it is to late and now you are ion for a rebuild.

I highly reccomend a factory manual, not Clymers Seloc or anything on CD, ti sounds like someone has really rigged your engine and you will need it to get it right again, you can get one here at iboats or on Ebay if money is tight.

Also while you are working on it change your gas line form the tank to the carbs and get an inline filter on it too.

General rule of thumb when it comes to water pumps/impellers, if you don't know when it was last changed and you are questioning water flow CHANGE IT!!!

Re: evinrude 50hp pumping water?

great advice as always lads!
i did change the lines but a filter is a top idea. my other outboards have had water out those relief ports but i think only at high rpm? there is definately no telltale is there anywhere else the water could be exiting that im not seeing? i will change the impellor when i get the time anyway but i thought running it for that long would have overheated and killed it by now anyway but still seems to be running fine. i know blokes who have put there on telltale system in, is it hard to accomplish?
the tan coloured wire that is cut from the forward controls is what i am assuming is the heat sensor should it go the top of the head where there is another earth wire? i know they are usually orange etc but they are all going to condensors etc...

there is also what seems to be an idle mixture knob on the back has the labels speed and lean on one direction and slow and rich on the other. im assuming it is the same kind of job as the mixture screws on a carb? i have it set in the middle but if i go past a certain point with the throttle it dies on me so i assume this is the issue? it seems odd you would have to manually turn a mixture setting depending on the speed u want to do but on a learning curb with these old outboards...
