My motor is stuck in reverse, when I try and shift to N or D the shift bar just free floats! Does not ingage into any other gear. I'm new to boat motors but mechanically inclined it has to be somethin stupid I'm just not seeing or would like a starting point to tearing apart the motor. Any help would be great. I noticed under the hood that on the shifter eyelit there is a hole that maybe a spring or cable is supposed to be attatched too?.. If so where does it connect too?

Its pretty hard to help you, if we don't know what model year motor you have. If you know it, please post here. If not, please look for the data plate on the motor an then look for the model code. It should be a 4 digit number - something like 6502 or 6904.

your cables are most likly broke or it came undone in your control box it would make sence that it is free when you go n-d couse it has slid out of cable clamp it will feel ok in reverse couse it is pushing the cable in reverse but going the other way is just nothing couse i think the cabl slide out in th controll box take apart and be cerfull remember how it goes together there are shock looking things that the cables go in and there is a allen bolt most likly holding the cable in that unit. mine use to slip out all the time easy fix

Remove the 4 bolts from the lower unit and drop it down an inch, I suspect the upper shift rod has come out of the brass coupler. If so the bolt probably fell down into the gear case housing. Check the coupler and bolt threads as well to make sure they are still in good shape.
