It is a 1970 model from what I observed.

Have you done a compression check? Is it hard to start?

Welcome to Iboats and happy holidays to you and yours.

Fuel starvation. Sounds alot like the carb is gummed up or has trash in it. Either that or a bad fuel pump, leaky fuel hose or vent on tank is closed or clogged. My first bet would be the carb.

Wow thanks guys for the quick replys

It starts on the second pull always. I have not performed a compression check.

I inspected the fuel tank looks like the vent is free. I will have to look further into the other issues. I need to get a manual on it before I start taking it apart.

Happy Holidays All!!!

Some of the 6hp motors in that time period use a cork type gasket, or ring near the main jet in the carb. This gasket will break down and fall apart, these small chunks can get stuck in the jet and will cause problems just like you mentioned.

That is a great idea, highly recommended by all these guys here. Also here is a website to find your part number for that motor.

Just copy the link and paste it to your address bar on your browser.

I think everyone has pretty much hit the nail on the head, as "they" say. Sounds like junk in the carb.

If the motor has been sitting around for a bit, rebuilding the carb, fuel pump and water pump is a good idea. The carb and the water pump are easy to do but I have to admit that I am lazy about the fuel pump and usually just buy a new one. They really aren't all that complicated but are sort of a pain to put back together.

You have a great little motor which will run "forever" if serviced occassionally.

I have a Johnson 1970 6hp seahorse that truely runs better than I could hope for. It has been taken great care of and has fresh carb, water pump, sparks, cleaned cylinders and new head gasket. I use it alot and especially hunting this time of year, I will admit it takes a beating some places from stumps and a crazy captain. I have long term plans for it, so what "service" should I annually do to ensure that it will last?

Thanks, Tyler

Tyler Im not sure where you are from, but if the motor gets stored during the winter months, ensure it is properly winterized. Keep an eye on the lower unit oil, and change it out at least every fall, along with new gaskets on the drain and vent screw. The carb should be rebuilt every 2 or 3 years, although with the newer fuel, that could soon become every year. Running seafoam mixed with your fuel helps alot. The impeller is a critical part of the cooling system and should be changed out about every 3 years.

The parts are available, right here on iboats. Below is a C & P from the iboats parts finder.

6 hp 1954-1979 18-7043 9-37106

If you have a cork float, replace that too. They are known to sink.
