first turn of the key turns like its going to start, then flat spot, nothing. Turn the key again nothing. So far we have changed the solenoid installed a new N70 heavy duty battery and checked out the wiring. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Hi lorraine
Starter motor will not operate. Here are some things to check.
Weak or shorted battery.
Loose or corroded battery connections (check both ends).
Safty switch inoperative or out of adjustment.
Throtle advanced too far.
Defective key switch.
Jammed starter drive parts.
Damaged starter drive parts.
Worn brushes.
Broken brush springs.
Open circut in soleniod.
Burned commutator.
Broken field terminal.
Shorted or open windings in the armature or field.
Ampmeter to key switch fuse blowen.
Excessive current draw.
Worn or dry armature shaft bearings.
Excessive friction in engine.
Brushes not seating.
Dirty or corroded commutator.
Loose pole pieces.
Bearing heads buckled.
Start checking the simple things first. My first guess would be the fuse or the safety switch. Remove all ground wires and clean the connections. Sometimes the corrosion is under where you can't see. Let us know how you make out.
Thanks for your reply. We are reletively new to both the internet and boating. With all those things to check out it possibly could be the safety switch with embarrasement.Where is it?
Thanks again look forward to hearing from you..
Sorry, please don't be imbarrased or intimidated. Welcome to boating and I-boats.
The safety switch should be located under the flywheel, mounted to the top of the engine block. It is actuated by a cam on the distributer base (the part that slides around when the throtle lever moves. All the folks here on this board are awesome. Most of the time these problems are not as hard to run down as they are for me to explain. If possible see if you can get a manual that covers your motor. Most public libaraies here will have something. Or you can purchess one. If nothing else this will realy help us comunicate about outboards. Hey, you get pictures too! Again please don't be afraid to ask any question. If I can't explain it, someone else will. There is also a search funtion on this board. You can do a search of past threads concerning your problem.
Did you visualy check the battery cables inch by inch. The ends may be attached but corroded inside. The battery cables may have cracks that have let in moisture and the corroded the copper.

I have experienced these issues. Once wiht the positive cable and then with and end to the neg cable.

Could be a bad starter dragging, but you have to make sure you have juice to the starter. Even a new battery with weak ground will not spin the starter.
Ummmm, excuse me alcan,

....but how do you figger the switch is located under the flywheel on a 69 70HP, when there wasnt a 70HP produced by OMC until 74?

Post your model number lorraine, if you havent already found the problem, and your question may be better answered.
lorraine
Don't know what year your motor is, but I'm betting it's time for a new starter. If all the connections are tight at the Battery and selonoid, jump out the selonoid and see if it cranks. If not, it's the starter.

Also check this link:

web page
Hello lorraine
If you could post the model# of your unit it would help us get down to brass tacks. As all starting circuts are basicly the same regaurdless of year, make or model. I gave you some generic info. With your model # I will be able to pull the manual for the exact model you have and be more specific. This # should be located on the transome clamp or on a welch plug on the engine block.
