Evinrude 70HP (85) repair gone bad

Hoping someone can help. Over the summer had a faulty overheat horn and was referred to a retired mechanic to fix my motor. He honed and replaced a cylinder, exhaust manifold and the impeller. Unfortunately for me he was also a little crazy and after 1 month and 3 phone calls to him he told me to come get my boat. I got back a bare motor and a card board box of my parts. I have no experience but have read the manual. I know where everything goes, electrical might be tough but the "mechanic" failed to label the bolts and screws and just threw them all into a plastic bag. If anyone has one of these motors it would be great if they could post some pictures to help identify bolts and screw locations. Thanks for any help

The factory exploded parts diagram for that engine are online: epc.brp.com. Possible you can print the pages so you can refer to a hard copy.
If you need torques and adjustment specs, you will need a factory service manual: outboardbooks,com

Thanks emdsapmgr, I have the manual. The exploded diagrams might help they are very bad when printed out. This is most of the problem with the manual as well the old black and white pictures can be confusing and lack clarity. Looks like I will spend the winter sorting and testing screws.

S.A. Baker, I'm sure he was a good mechanic in his day, was never disrespectful of the guy but I think he's missing a few screws. It was a 2+hour drive to get the boat back and he drove it all the way with screws and washers bouncing around loose in the splash well and under the engine cowl. Hopefully I won't be missing any. I know I pissed him off by calling to ask how my boat was coming along since he had it for a month. I just hope others are not taken in by him.

Oh I don't blame you. Maybe he was doing other folks' engines as well and therefore that was his reason he wasn't finished in a month with yours. Watch for parts that just don't seem to fit. Could be parts from somebody else's engine. IDK :noidea:

My problem right now is the stator retainer clips. Since I didn't take it apart I have no idea where they are suppose to go.

new mystery part. Trying to figure out where this goes. Been looking at diagrams online and can't seem to find it. Looks like a cover possibly for the wires off stator under flywheel? Anyone know?

You should start a new thread when you post as this one is a year old. The part covers the main wire harness where it goes into the motor. Bolts into the lower shroud, right side looking at the front of the motor opposite the shift cables.

This is 15's thread. No problem re-opening it with a new question and keeping all of it in one place.

Going by 15's first post, a mechanic reduced his Rude to a basket of parts and he is trying to put it all back together.

ok latest "what the hell are these?" Black rubber spacers?

Due to the mechanic just throwing all this into un-labeled bags I don't know if these are old parts that were replaced or not. Doing pretty good overall on the engine finding where all the parts go back on. Sorting bolts really not fun.

Ok the thing shaped like a Z is to hold the control cables on to the motor. If you are staring at the front of the motor on the left you can see see where the control cables go in. It bolts to the intake manifold just inside of there you will see the spot for it. The small silver thing is the clip for the Big Red Plug retainer. It bolts to the exhaust plate and the retainer slides into it to hold the plug in place place. Can you give me a better pic of the 2 round things can't really tell what they are.

I'll get a better shot tonight and post it. Found this video that shows good reference to the parts you identified so will drop it here for easy reference. I like that this guy replaced the VRO with just a simple pump, would like to do that sometime. Thanks for your help.

Supposedly the water pump impeller was changed. Maybe something with the lower unit. hope they arn't too important

I have a 1977 70 horsepower that looks a lot like yours. I changed my impeller yesterday and didn't come across anything like in your picture. Good luck.

Grommet relief valve, part of the thermostat which was fixed I assume so I think they are scrap parts.
