Evinrude 70hp

Hi Guys<br /><br />Ive just purchased a boat with an evinrude 70hp outboard, i have not had it in the water yet but when i run motor off the hose and move the accelerator the revs to not pick up right away then all of a sudden they pick up and go very high and i have to back of the accelerator does anyone have any ideas what is causing this and also could it be that its not under pressure:ie: in water any help will be greatly appreciated

Eddy.... The timing base under the flywheel may be sticking. It should move freely from its idle position to full spark advance (up against the black rubber stop button) as you advance the throttle. If sticking, this is usually caused by one of the four (4) retaining clamps being slightly too tight.<br /><br />Your problem could also be caused by a fouled carburetor, but the sticking timer base is the most likely suspect.
