I have a 1974 85hp Evinrude (85493-B) that I have had for a couple of years now. I got the boat out for this year and changed the gear oil, spark plugs and got new gas/oil mix. I got the motor started up out of water with the ?ear muffs? and it starts up, idles and when giving it throttle up it runs and sounds great. So I took it to the lake put it in the water and went to start it up and it seemed to be difficult to start. Once I got it started when I raised the lever to idle up the motor to warm it up it start to cut out. After a few mins I went ahead and left the dock area and throttled up and the motor was ?sluggish? and at full throttle it wasn't going very fast, at first I thought it choke was on but I checked that. The motor also seemed to use a lot more fuel then what I would consider ?normal?. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated

Start by checking spark and compression, if they check out ok, you might have a carb problem.

What would cause the motor to use more gas?
