Re: Evinrude 8hp super hot 1984

Got it! For anyone trying to do this in the future, use a 1.5" piece of PVC to hold it and a BFH to beat on it.

It was kind of scary to bang it out of there since it was factory painted like the rest of the LU (i'm certain the motor has never been repainted) but as soon as it started to bend a little the paint came right off and it was obviously the sort of thin stuff you'd expect to find on a seal..

Only one dealership around here has these in stock and hopefully they will be open by tomorrow. They've been closed all week.

Glad you got them out Ok.

Not surprising they put up a bit of a fight if they were the originals still in there.

Going to replace the drive shaft seals as well while you are at it ?

Re: Evinrude 8hp super hot 1984

Yes I'm going to replace everything I can in there. But just found out that dealership won't re-open from Holiday closure until Monday :(

As far as I can tell this is my shopping list:
From gearcase
2 0324631 SEAL, Bearing housing to propeller shaft 1 $19.99 USD
3 0324632 SEAL, Gearcase head 1 $22.99 USD
4 0325040 GASKET, Impeller housing. 5 INCH LONGER PARTS 2 $3.42 USD

7 0322494 O-RING, Bearing housing to gearcase 1 $4.04 USD

14 0324637 GASKET, Gearcase cover. 5 INCH LONGER PARTS 1 $6.63 USD

26 0305242 O-RING, Shaft rod 1 $0.82 USD
27 0324639 SEAL, Driveshaft 2 $8.96 USD

31 0311598 WASHER 2 $0.87 USD

55 0303191 O-RING, Driveshaft 1 $1.53 USD

Already have the new impeller

From cylinder & crankcase
22 0378065 THERMOSTAT 1 $25.51 USD
--------

Which takes me to all that plus spark plugs (were NGK and old), head gasket & others (cooked), fuel pump rebuild (was leaking), carburetor rebuild (was pretty bad), idle adjustment knob (was missing), a few other misc things that aren't coming to mind, and scrubbed the carbon from the pistons and head with steel wool and solvent. Everything under the heads is sparkling and smooth now. No scoring, not carbon, just clean.

At this point I could probably have just bought a running motor, but considering the excellent shape that the hard pieces of this motor are in it's going to be a kick *** 2014 E8RCRM pretty soon

EDIT:
Doesn't this motor share parts with Mercury or some other manufacturer? I think I saw something like that when first starting to look for parts. Maybe something can happen this week..

salt water motors invite problems in the water passages, but it sounds like you cleared those out when you pulled the head. You might also check to see that there are no obstructions up in the leg under the powerhead (like a wasp or mouse nest around the exhaust opening at the rear of the leg.) I'm a curious about your reference to "super lean" motors. The oil mix should never be leaner than 50:1, even for those motors that toyed with 100:1 mixtures (factory went back to 50:1). The carb can be set too lean as well, but chances are there will be running issues with too lean a setting before the engine heats up -- could be a factor, though. Having said that, I've usually found that these motors run better with a carb setting on the lean side. It sounds like you have all kinds of issues getting this one back into shape, but most of them probably aren't related to running temp.

That motor is made by Evinrude /Johnson only.----Wait , maybe the thermostat is the same as a Mercury and that is about it.

Re: Evinrude 8hp super hot 1984

I had found marineengine.com listing for the carb kit when i first started working on this motor for this and a few other parts
Evinrude Johnson OMC Carb Kit,with Float 0439072 is equivalent to parts:
? 18-7223 Sierra Marine
? 802131 Mercury Marine
? 9-37101 Mallory Marine
? 40550 GLM
but further searching didn't quickly come up with hits on the merc part numbers i found so that seems correct that it's just OMC.

Either way, I have all of the LU rebuild parts now and after this weekend there can't possibly be anything left to stop it from cooling, especially if the only reason it wasn't cooling was that it was in N not F :)

The gearcase head doesn't seem to want to slide back down to the spot it should sit..

Also what is the correct orientation for the shift cam? I checked the parts diagram but what you see looking into those little holes isn't a whole lot like what you see in the diagram.

Just put one of these units together last month.----The shift cam when it is out has the words --TOP ----on it.--Hard to assemble it the wrong way.

Re: Evinrude 8hp super hot 1984

I didn't take the pinion or forward gear out so it's just rattling around in there. I should be able to get an angle to read TOP on it though thanks.

Shouldn't the head fit down close to the back of the gear and hold it close to the dog? I'm concerned something may have gotten damaged while banging and prying and now it's not fitting on there right. The part that's beveled out on the prop shaft gets about 1/2 or 3/4 of an inch into the sleeve in the head then it just jams and won't spin.

edit: You can see this in the image above. That's where it stops. It looks like it used to seat farther down and the gray part would be where the sleeve was and the black part I guess is where it usually spins against the seals?

Re: Evinrude 8hp super hot 1984

The gear MUST fit right up to the gearcase head.----The ring you see there is the thrust bearing surface !

Re: Evinrude 8hp super hot 1984

Well instead of carefully picking out the main gearcase head seal after getting it loosened by knocking it with a screwdriver from the back, I gave it one last good bang to knock it the rest of the way out and the just BARELY slightly thicker than I thought screwdriver shaft rammed into the hole and got stuck. So I'm afraid that may have just slightly warped the inside of it. The head assembly definitely does not want to go any farther than the picture. I even tried pulling the sleeve back out and turning it around on the off chance that it only wanted to go one way.

This is as far as the sleeve will go. It will just come down to the point that the left side is right at the edge of the bevel.

The gear MUST butt up against the bearing housing.---Your results may vary !!---Time to measure / inspect / fit the parts properly.

Well that answers a few questions. Time to get filing or get ebaying.

Update: I gave the gearcase head to a machine shop and they had a try at it, said they couldn't get it how I wanted it, and gave it back with no charge. deer season was about over so I just left it alone until now. The thing was a little better after the machine shop hit it so I just went ahead and bolted it all down and let the bolts force it back into place and success! It's all back together an working!

thanks all for your help
