Hello,

I bought a carb kit for my Evinrude 1973 9.5 hp sportwin motor in order to replace it. I am wondering though if there are additional gaskets required for the job that will likely not be included in the kit. Also sealant? lube? Any ideas? I thank you kindly -jim

The Sierra Kits and BRP/OMC kits both have the needed gaskets. No sealants are recommended on the carburetors.

Be sure to replace the float and needle and to use the spring clip to connect the float valve needle to the arm of the float.

Don't use rags, or anything that could leave a fiber or thread behind.

sounds good. thanks alot. On a different thread I saw somebody recommending against starter fluid. Should I try to avoid using it even if Engine wont fire when choked. (has sat 10 yrs). I am also replacing water pump. Thanks again-jim

The 9.5 can be a difficult to start at times. If the problem continues, turn the throttle up to the neutral stop, close the choke, then alternate between gently squeezing the primer bulb and three or four quick pulls on the starter. Make sure that the fuel tank is as close to the level of the engine as is practical.

Starter fluid does not have any oil and, instead, washes away the oil that is already on the engine parts. If you need to, use a spray container of pre-mix, but be careful.

Starter fluid is very bad, removes all lubrication.

I use WD40, which , though not perfect, fires off pretty well and provides much more lubricity.

If I have no pre mix I spray in fogging oil first and then starter fluid... then it's gets the lube...

A kit for that motor should be available at your local marine dealor. If not, try Seaway Marine, or Engine Blade and Prop.

When working on the 9.5 motors, be careful not to drop anything, the upper cowls have a habit of making small screws and pieces disappear. Really, it's like a black hole.

Since this thread has reappeared after all this time, it is important to mention that only the OEM kit has all of the carburetor parts that are needed including the new float. The part number is 0382048 - available from or through any BRP dealer: http://dealerlocator.evinrude.com/en/410000.shtml
