Hello all, i have started to convert a 1968 (9822) evinrude 9.5 hp to a short shaft. It is clean but was used in salt water and was stored for 20 years. I pulled the lower unit but the drive shaft stayed in the power head. the extension block, water tube and long linkage clamp have been removed but I cant get the drive shaft out of the powerhead. Also does anyone know were to fing a short drive shaft for this model used? I was told to remove the long Driveshaft tube from the impeller case also? Thanks

I'd get the old driveshaft out before going further. If you can't get it out .....

no parts needed.

Well I better get it out what would you suggest. The shaft turns fine. I sprayed some liquid wrench down the shaft to break any rust or corrosion. Is this wright or wrong. :(

You may be in for some unpleasent surprises once you get the driveshaft out. It's stuck because somebody left the o-ring at the shaft splines out and water got up into the splines in the crankshaft, rusting them. Even if they are still useable, you'll need to clean the rust out of the recess where the o-ring slips in or you'll have the same thing all over again. Of course, you can't hardly even see way up in there.

Do you care about saving the long shaft? Clamp something to it and beat it out after turning the motor upside down and running some penetrant down the shaft an letting it soak. As said, hope the crank is useable.

You will need a seal that goes on top of the water pump housing when you put it back together. It does in the short shaft model what the tube does in the long shaft. The motor won't run with the hood on if you leave that seal out. The seal is listed as no longer available.

Are we having fun yet?

Thanks F_R it seems the fun is just beginning and no I do not care about the long shaft. The motor ran well in a barrell when I bought it a week ago. Well such is the cost of learning. In addition to shearing off the corroded bolts.

Can I make or convert a seal from a similar model? I am already into this thing and won't stop until it is right. Can the driveshaft be shortened 5" by a machine shop? There must be a outboard recyclers some ware in North America for older parts?

This is not exactly a hypersonic jet engine (scramjet) were talking about here. I have time just not a lot of money.

If you turn the motor upside down and let your blaster work for twenty four hours or so, you may be able to pull that driveshaft out by striking it firmly with a rubber mallet while lifting it up. I used a large vise grip and a block of wood laid on the bottom of the midsection for leverage.

I will give it a go ezeke. Even though someone sold me a outboard that was not as advertised I in good conscience won't do that to the next boater.o:)

Oh, and be careful not to disturb the water tube. If it comes down, you have to disassemble most of the motor to get it back up.

Whatever you end up needing for the conversion, drop me an e-mail and I'll see if I've got it and what condition it may be in. I'd be more than happy to get rid of some odds and ends laying about for the cost of the shipping. At the very least I'd be digging something out, taking a look, shaking my head, tossing it out and freeing up space. Sometimes you just need an incentive for some spring cleaning.

I know I've got a short drive shaft taking up space someplace. I'll need to take a look to see if it's something I'd ever want to give someone to actually use though.

Thanks ezeke i'll be careful about the water tube....

And IWOMBAT I most definitely need a short drive shaft for a 1968 evinrude 9.5 fastwin and possibly a crankshaft for the same. If you have please let me know. I would be forever grateful.d:)

Re: Evinrude 9.5 hp converting to short shaft

So I have a short shaft in decent condition. There's a nice wear groove where the shaft passes through the water pump seal. The splines all look real good though.

I have a crankshaft, but about all it's good for is to add some weight to a crab pot or maybe dangle off a downrigger and troll real slow. The lower main journal is so pitted out it'd make short short order of any bearings you put on it.

Drop me some mail:
bob@combshouse.com and I'll figure out how to get you the drive shaft.
