Evinrude electric start not working

I have a 1984 9.9 Evinrude electric start motor.
Model # E10ELCRA--Serial # E0341805. I took it out fishing this weekend and the electric start would not work--no click, nothing.
I disconnected it from the first battery (fully charged) and connected it to my trolling battery
(fully charged) and still nothing. I attempted to pull start it and it fired right up :D Had a great time fishing and so on...everytime I had to pull start it on the lake it fired right up. Back at home I checked the wires for broken connections, etc. and everything checked out fine. I'm purchasing a manual tomorrow, but thought I'd try to get some advice for a head start. What would my next step be? Any information is greatly appreciated. :) MB

Re: Evinrude electric start not working

hello.
It could be your starter solenoid.
Get some jumper cables and run them from your full battery straight to the poles on your starter. If it starts that way you know your starter is good. If it stays dead you should repair the starter.

Hey Rolmops--thanks for the advice. I just did what you suggested and no luck. How difficult is it to replace the starter? I'll check out the manual tomorrow. Is it ok to still use the motor and pull start it or can it do damage?
MB

You can pull-start that puppy 'til your arm falls off and not hurt the engine so go back and slaughter those fish.

c/6

Hooty

MB
I had the same problem with my 83 70 hp Rude. After all said and done , cleaned all the selenoid connections, battery connections, and still got nothing. It ended up being the inline fuse from the selenoid to thre starter. It cost $ 1.77 for 4 fuses....try that it may be the problem.
Good Luck
Deuce

Re: Evinrude electric start not working

A common so-start problem with the 9.9-15 is corrosion on the ground connection underneath the front of the motor. Take the wiring off and sand each of the terminals and mounting area for a shiney connection. Make sure the start-in-gear protection switch is operational and the other electrical connections are clean.

Don't run the motor without connection to the battery, even if you are operating with manual start -- will burn out the rectifier.

Hey rolmops--I misunderstood about what you
told me about hooking jumper cables directly to my battery and to the posts on the starter. When I looked at my starter again today, I noticed only one post exposed. Would the + connect to the post? Where would the - cable go? Thanks! MB

Re: Evinrude electric start not working

Usually you will see a post with a heavy wire hooked on to it.That will be your power supply,or + if you will. The - or ground cable from your battery should be hooked to the metal part that bolts your starter to the engine body.
good luck
