Evinrude Fastwin 18 -73 spark problem?

Hi. I bought old Fastwin and it does break spark plugs. I measured coils with cheap voltmeter, other was 5.2 kOhms and other 0. I ordered "new" coil to it, hope it fixes problem.<br /><br />What plugs I should use to in it? I read this forum, and Champion works better... maybe? But what type. I dont have manual to this motor.<br /><br />Howbout other electric parts, condensators and connnectors, gap to 0.20 inches, timing?<br /><br /><br />Well there were questions to you I just wanted to use motor to trolling, it might be big to that.<br /><br />Thanks.

Welcome to iboats. <br /><br />Points gap should be .020"<br />Sparkplug Champion J4C or J6C gapped at .030"<br />There will be a mark on the cam that pushes the throttle open. That mark should line-up when the throttle butterfly begins to open. A lot of people set that to where the roller begins to touch the cam, but that's not quite right. The mechanism has a bit of slop, so you have to watch the butterfly to see when it actually begins to move.<br /><br />I hope this helps. Good luck.

Thanks for that reply for timing issue. <br /><br />Just wondering what might be right resistance in those coils... Used part which I just got has resistance of 11.3 kOhm, (it looks terrible, heart of coil is loose and theres little crack on side) <br /><br />Other coil (which looks fine to me outwards) has resistance of 5.3 kOhm.<br /><br />Hmmm... <br /><br />Engine works out fine otherwise. It runs well with one cylinder , just thought that compression must be at least quite fine.

Is there a reason you bought a used coil as a replacement. It sounds like you got a bad one. These coils aren't an expensive part, so it just makes sense to use new parts.<br /><br />I don't know about you, but I'd much rather use my outboard than work on it. Sometimes buying cheap, used parts is not good economy.

I bought used part because i thought I cant find new ones nomore. And here's no partshops nearby. Well I'll return that rotten coil, and seek for a new one. <br /><br />That's so true what you said CATransplant.

Where are you located? You can order those coils over the internet, but if you're not in the US, you might have to pay a little extra for shipping. They're readily available, though.

Well.<br /><br />I gave hammer to that coil, which resistance was 0. I hit the heart so that it moved to otherside. Then, I measured it, and it says 5.3 kOhms!! I didnt try if it give spark, i think it will. Lakes are still frozen in here, cant go for a testrun, but good advice of old motorowners - keep a hammer in boat. <br /><br />Price of new parts are here 1/2 price of whole motor, ordering via internet is only option. <br /><br />But now, week more and I can testrun Fastwin. I'm betting it will start first attempt and run fine from that on!!!<br /><br />feeling optimistic
