Re: evinrude identification

So you have the serial #? What is it? On some, the model is the first characters of the serial #.

The 3-cylinder 65hp with Hydro-Electric shift was only made in 1972. The 1973 had power shift and the 1971 was 60hp.

Re: evinrude identification

The serial# is J0001505 model # was on same plate but can't read it anymore, the boat is a 1986 but I'm sure the engine isn't that new. I've had some people tell me that because it has a J begining serial # that is a Johnson. but my buddy has a evinrude 70 hp and his serial # also begins with a J when Johnson took over evinrude from what I can tell all evinrudes have a J in the serial #. So from what you said they only made the Hydro Electric Drive in 72 it has to be a 1972 motor.

Re: evinrude identification

The J in the serial number means it was assembled at the Johnson plant in Waukegan IL. That means very little from a practical standpoint because a lot of Johnsons were also made at the Evinrude plant in Milwaukee. AND both were also made all over the world.

BTW, Johnson did not "take over Evinrude". If anything it was the other way around when back around 1936 Ole Evinrude's Elto and Evinrude and Lockwood, collectivly called Outboard Motors Corporation acquired Johnson and formed OMC --Outboard Marine Corporation.
