Evinrude Issues...IDLE

I have a 84 Evinrude 70. It has a manual choke under the cover. It was running WO great. No issues. However, all of the sudden it started to feel like it was slowing down with throttle wide open. Next we turned off engine. Then fished some and turned back on. The IDLE WAS OUT OF CONTROL...like 10,000 rpms...could never get the engine to idle down. Manual choke would not work either.

I am confused...how do I get the manual choke to be operable from the throttle area?

Thanks,

if everything is hoked up right and the choke solonoid works and is conected and all is wired correctly you puch the key in to choke it. That is not your probelm though you either have a carb linkage problem holding the butterflys open or bad powerpack or other problem.

Have your played with it carb-wise (low idle screw etc?) since the problem started with a hose hooked up..have you cleaned the carb and greased the linkages?

What have you done so far?

you either have a timing plate issue or a carb issue. you have to communicate with us, and answer our questions for us to help you.

okay...I have a manual choke system. I have to take cover off to choke the damn thing. It is the little black solenoid choke unit. It has a red lever on it. when I started it is was revved high. I played with the red lever on the choke unit to idle it down. That worked, but after a while it seemed like it was stuck at a very high RPM in neutral. Now it seems like the choke unit doesn't even work at all. HOpe this helps more.

Re: Evinrude Issues...IDLE

This is strange, two engines with similar problems in different posts. Since it slowed down on you then you stopped to fish. After sitting a while you start and it tries to run away I have to believe it is a fuel pump issue. How long has it been since you overhauled it. The diaphgram in the fuel pump is pulsed by vacuum and pressure in the crankcase. If it gets a slight hole in it no longer will it pump full amounts of fuel and the leak into the crankcase at idle will feed the engine allowing it to run away. There is a good set of fuel pump overhaul instructions in the frequently asked questions section. Take a look at it. Lots of luck.

Re: Evinrude Issues...IDLE

Sounds just like my issue. "90 hp runaway idle"
The black thing with the red lever is not a choke but a solenoid primer valve that shoots fuel into the carb base for start up. I believe the 2 3 and 4 cylinders models have the same thing.
I had to run in 10 miles holding the valve open when high speed jets clogged, so it shoots a pretty good stream of fuel to the engine.
Like you I fooled with the lever and it idled down. Then later rev'd up again.
I'm starting to think that maybe Ethanol in fuel lately may have gotten to the pump or other diaphram causing a leak into the crankcase. That's my next move. sese hints on isolation on my thread.
Others have hinted air leak but how do you get a sudden un expected air leak that does this and I've never sen a similar problem in 24+ years of running a V4 and have been around water everyday for the past 35 years with boats everywhere and mechanics under every shade tree.

Solved mine,,"90 hp runaway idle" it was carbs, stuck float or float valve with trash.
Sounds like you need some carb work.
Good luck
