I just bought an old evinrude lark 40 that is a 196? model. I need to put an impellar in it and I was wanting to know how much trouble this is. I keep hearing about having to remove the shifter linkage and that sounds like it could be a problem. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated as I do not have a manual. It is also an electric shift, if that means anything.

Re: Evinrude Lark 40 water impellar replacement

You have to remove the lower rear cover (whole bunch of phillips head screws). Then disconnect the shift wires (you'll figure it out when you see it). Then remove the plate on the side about half way down, and feed the shift wires out through the hole you just made. Now remove the screws from the other plate just inside that one (the wires go through it). Squirt some oil on the wires cable and pull that plate off the cable. Now tie a piece of cord to the wires to make it easier to feed it back up when reinstalling. Now remove the bolts holding the lower unit on (6 short ones and one long one) Leave the extension housing with the upper part, if it is a long shaft). Now twist the gearcase back and forth a bit while pulling down. The water pump will be right there on top with the drive shaft going down through it.

Don't forget to reinstall that o-ring on top of the water pump housing when you put it back together. It won't run with the hood on if you leave it out, and drive you nuts trying to figure out why.

I just got finished with it. It was just as you said. Went back together the same way it came apart and I did not have any parts left over. Thanks for the help.
