This motor is new to me. Does this model have the flexibility to use a different set of controls? I have an Evinrude simplex control with motor and the original controls that include control key ignition, push buttons for fwd and n and reverse. I also have the other electrical parts wire connectors. Can this motor be used with a Johnson sea horse control and a new ignition? I am putting this motor on a Boston Whaler 13 1960 model and have a set of Johnson controls. Also will be using the original BW pulley steering.

Thanks

As long as you can find a schematic and make sure the wiring is the same, I see no reason why not. Make darned sure though, so you don't roast any wiring or solenoids.

If the Johnson control is for an electra-matic gearcase it will work. If is for a hydro-electric it will not and will break something in the gearcase when shifted in reverse. Forward would be neutral, neutral would be forward, and reverse would be forward and reverse at the same time, until the springs broke. Then it would be neutral all of the time.

Naw, the 1960 Lark II is NOT electric shift!! The Simplex is the proper control for it. The Selectric control won't work, no how, no way.

1st 40hp Electric shift came out in 1962, Lark IV

Yes. One cable goes to the shifter and the other one goes to the throttle. The short control stick is the shifter and the long one is the throttle.

Thanks gonna try and get it running Monday? What are the original colors as I want to paint and replace some items? A color photo would be great. What manual should I get for this motor?

The original OEM manual is the best, but it assumes that you are a boat mechanic. It can be found at outboardbooks.com (Ken Cook Co.)
Sometimes they show up on ebay. Other manuals (Clymer or Seloc) are available here at iboats.
Do you want the colors of the motor or controller?

Re: Evinrude Lark II 1960 elec start, elec shift

I have the 1963 model 40 hp of the evinrude Lark.
Mine has a connection on the right for the throttle.
There is an arm on the left I believe to shift gears?
I know my motor is suppose to use the Selectric shifter.
But can I use a simplex shifter on it as well?
I can not find a selectric shifter.
Simplex should work to connect one cable to the throttle and the other to the gear lever on the side?
I also can not find a Junction box for this model.
Would it be safe to just connect a starter button and kill switch?

Thanks
