Evinrude -older- 9.9 broken prop seal

Hi, I just bought a 150$$ sportwin 9.9 to replace my stolen 6hp...<br /><br />It hums but the lower end clanks. I checked the grease down there (learning quick!!) and it was skanky and has metal powder in it.<br /><br />Are parts and tools still available ?? Someone suggested I find a new lower unit, but I am not sure of the year.<br /><br />Ser Numb is:<br />94225<br />EO1953<br /><br />Any assistance appreciated,<br />Thanks in advance, John<br /><br />john@thinman.com

HMM the numbers must be wrong - no 9.9 was ever made with those nombers.<br /><br />Anyway the 9.9 was produced from 1974 to 1992 and in an upgraded version from 1992-<br />You can get all parts from your local OMC dealer - the same gearbox is used today on the new 9.9 and 15 hp 4stroke Evinrude/Johnson OB´s

9422 is a 1964 9.5 HP

Hi all,<br /><br />I found sites w/ the serial numbers and everything posted, lots of information out there.<br /><br />I am surprised that the manuals are not available on the web tho.<br /><br />I guess I need to know how to access the damage inside. If it is too bad I will need another lower unit. I am not optimistic, sparkling bits of metal in the skanky grease.<br /><br />The lower end looks abused too, dont even think there are seals between the sections.<br /><br />I believe this engine can be uped to 15 hp with the bigger carb...<br /><br />John

Ahhh, when I opened the filler screws, the vacuum broke and grease came thru the prop seal.<br /><br />I took some grease, and filterd out metal filings thru a napkin with a little gas.<br /><br />I need to know the instructions for dismantling the lower end so I can access the damage to the gears and stuff. Then I go parts hunting.

John, Aftermarket manuals are available at NAPA auto parts,The tab at the top of this page ,Amazon.com,ebay etc. Also you could do research at the library.<br /> H Chalk and Son Fishers Landing NY has always been excallent for parts.You may be able to get bearings and seals from a bearing supply house.<br /> If the housing isnt ruined im sure you can fill it with the stuff it needs.
