Evinrude overheating alarm...

Hi all,
I just fired up my boat for the first time today after what seemed like a very long winter. It started ok but after running for a few minutes with the earmuffs on the overheating alarm started squealing. A steady stream was coming from the pee-hole. I thought that maybe my earmuffs weren't allowing enough water in so I took it to a nearby lake and lowered her into the water. Same thing, after a few minutes the overheating alarm went off again. Again, water was pumping from the pee-hole and water was spraying from the 2 holes just below the power-head. The holes in the lower unit appear to be free from obstruction but there are screens over them and it is hard to see inside.

My motor is a 1985 Evinrude VRO, 90hp, serial # E90MLCDCR1306183.

Any idea on what the problem could be?

Thanks!

Dave,
Check your thermostats and see if they are working correctly. If you have a service manual it tells you everything you need to do.

Good Luck
Todd

Re: Evinrude overheating alarm...

Dave.... Water will gain access to that exhaust baffle area first (where the hose attaches for the water telltale outlet), and from the sounds of it, the water pump is operating as it should.

Occasionally a thermostat will stick which results in the problem you're encountering. If this is the case, jazzing the throttle upwards quickly a few times or so (not unlike a hotrodder punching the pedal) will free the thermostat.

Your engine has two thermostats. If one is sticking, simply feeling the cylinder heads will reveal which one.

The thermostat water outlet is the slots/holes that exist just above and to the rear of the cavitation plate.

I don't have a service manual for this motor but I would like to get one. Which one do I need and where is the best place to get it?

Thanks.
