I'm still having problems with my motor. It's a 1966 Evinrude Ski Twin 33hp 33653d. I originally had problems with coughing/spit back and after replacing the entire fuel system and all ignition components it will not even fire. Compression is 95 on both cylinders. The carb was rebuilt, and when I spray gas into the throat it will not even fire. My spark is orange, not blue, so I'm thinking it may not have a strong enough spark.

I just finished putting on new coils and spark plug wires, is there a special way to install the coils as far as spacing with the flywheel? How do you install them in the correct spot with the flywheel installed? I don't know what else to do besides taking this thing to the scrap yard.

Hi gwoloshyn. I used to have a '66 Johnson 33 hp. It was a great, reliable motor. It sounds like you've figured out that you spark isn't quite right. You should definitely be getting a nice bright blue spark with all new components. I would double checking the point gap which should be set at .020" with the crankshaft cam in its highest position (usually around the "O" in the word TOP that is stamped into the cam). I would also make sure that the spark plug wires are TWISTED onto the coil posts rather than just poking them on there. You may need to snip about 1/2" off of the coil end of the wire to expose some fresh copper. It's even better if you want the replace the plug wires altogether with some nice new 7mm copper core spark plug wires. That's really all there is to the ignition; points, condensers and wires. Here's a handy link that can walk you through an OMC magneto rebuild as well as a link for an overall tune up of your motor. Holler if you get stuck.
