Need your help guys to get started in the right direction. I have a 1985 evinrude, 50 hp. Engine runs fine most of the time but sometimes engine goes into a stall and will idle ok but will not run very fast under load. Found bad pick up tube in tank, replace was sure this was my problem but not. Today motor ran fine on several long runs but on the way to the ramp I hit some big wakes and motor stalled again. To get back the same day I had to push the auto choke in which helped a lot. Send me some ideas please.

When was the last time you rebuilt your carb/carbs? If you had to use the choke to get in, it sounds to me like you could have an obstruction in a carb and causing it to run lean.

Sounds like it's time to rebuild them. It's pretty easy. Get a manual and it'll be the best 40 bucks you'll spend learning to maintian the motor.

Thanks for the info that the direction I was leaning just needed a nudge.

You may have crap in your tank if it happens after hitting a big wave. The crap gets disturbed by hitting the wave, and gets caught on the pick up screen. You could use an external filter with replaceable elements, and punch a hole in the pick up screen.

I have cleaned the tank and replaced the fuel pickup, pump screen is clear and fuel will pump to the carbs. Since my first post I have removed the carbs and waiting till monday to pickup the rebuild kits. It appears someone has been in these carbs, all the screws to hold the bowl and mount carbs to engine were not very tight. Also they have two different needle orfices installed. Other than that they were clean did not show much wear. I did notice before removing them that while pumping the fuel line bulb some fuel was leaking from the top carb. After rebuild I will reply with results.

Okay here's an update on my evinrudes loss of power. Cleaned and put kit in carbs found several fuel leaks on lines at carbs. Cranks, idles and runs perfect in driveway still have to give it the high speed test. Thank for your help guys.

also if you decarbon your engine that will clean out your engine and give you better performance. easy to do. use seafoam(auto stores) i gal gas,3-4 oz seafoam,3 oz oil. disconnect line from tank and hook to gal can. works wonders.
