Evinrude Starter rotation direction

I purchased a 1977 85Hp Evinrude motor. Model 85-799S The starter goes around but does not engage the flywheel. I charged the batteries for 24 hours.

The starter gear rotates in a counter clockwise direction when I turn on the ignation. When I manually turn it the other direction (clock wise), the gear goes up to engage the flywheel and drops back down when I release it. I sprayed WD40 on it to insure it wasn't stuck.

Which way should it go and is it in the way it is hooked up?

It has two batteries and they are connected positive to positive.

The engine crankshaft turns clockwise, so the starter bendix gear should turn counter clockwise. When you hit the key and the bendix gear spins counter clockwise, not sure why the bendix is not kicking up to the flywheel teeth. Maybe someone tried to rebuild the starter and got the bendix on backwards?

Be careful with the WD-40. If you get it down in the starter motor it will short out the windings.

You batteries are connected in paralled,2 12 volt batts putting out 12Volts means twice the power at 12 volts=longer usable running time.If I,m not mistaken the motor should run clock wise, the flywheel should turn right clockwise. They do make clockwise and counterclockwise motors,So then they also make starters to turn both ways.I tried to see if your motor ran left handed I cant find anything But someone else whit more knowlege I'm sure will help, takes abit of time sometimes.I think you have the wrong starter??????

Does the motor have a "right hand" prop?

Your starter is turning the correct rotation, John, and so is the Bendix. You turning the Bendix CW to bring it up is the same as the motor running the opposite direction, CCW, which it does.

1. Clean the Bendix shaft. A small amount of WD-40 should do it okay.

2. Put a few drops of very light machine oil (Singer is good) on the shaft and manually run the Bendix up and down a few times.

3. Remove both ends of all big wires that run between the battery and the starter. Scrub the end connectors until bright, scrub the connections, too, then reassemble. This is critical; a connection can be tight and look good, but a few millohms of resistance from corrosion will cause exactly the symptoms you describe.

If it still does the same bad stuff, have you starter tested and test your solenoid as described in the Top Secret file on Outboard won't start.

Good luck, and let us know what happens. :)

Follow JB's advise. Most starter issues are due to excessive voltage drop, or just low voltage and the causes are typically terminations or corroded cables. Don't ignore the ground cables either.

I stand and applaud your expertiese. The connections looked okay but when I removed the cables, the cables were cooroded under the screws. I cleaned them, put vasoline on them and hit the switch and immediatly the starter engaged the flywheel.

Thanks mates!

There's a grease made for electric connections,It can be found in most any box store in the elec. dept., Dielectric grease works much better than vasoline or regular grease
