I purchased a 1977 85Hp Evinrude motor. Model 85-799S The starter goes around but does not engage the flywheel. I charged the batteries for 24 hours.
The starter gear rotates in a counter clockwise direction when I turn on the ignation. When I manually turn it the other direction (clock wise), the gear goes up to engage the flywheel and drops back down when I release it. I sprayed WD40 on it to insure it wasn't stuck.
Which way should it go and is it in the way it is hooked up?
It has two batteries and they are connected positive to positive.
