My 2hp evinrude has a spark, fuel getting to the engine. I pull start the motor but it won't take. What would you suggest i did next. The motor has no clutch but seems clean etc. The engine alsi seems in good nick, though i don't know what it really looks like inside. If the answer involes mechanical stuff then I'd rather take it for a service.

Any suggestions?

Re: Evinrude starting problem

This is what i know so far:

on the clamp: 2402e c53929
on engine: C0053928
on the pull start drum: Gt-580892-52 D1

The archive gives an age of 1974 for 2402.
The lever below the pull start drum says - stop, start and fast?

I can see the throttle handle on top, but there are two knobs at the top. One at the top seems to say choke, but i have another which is not clear and one at the bottom which says rich or lean. Can anyone tell me what these controls are for and how far i should set them - as i can turn each knob a long way out.

fuel mix 50:1
plugs champion ---RJ6C gap at 30

I am told that if I have good spark and compression, then I may need to adjust the carb. I may be getting too much fuel. I may need to clean the carb. The carb may have a stuck float or the float may be out of adjustment. Make sure the choke or primimg system is working properly. Make sure that the fuel is mixed at 50:1. I should use a gauge to check compression. But so long as I have a good bounce off the compression stroke that should be ok. Another thing that is common here are leaking crankcases. I may have leaking crank shaft seals. For a 2-stroke motor to run the crankcase has to be under compression.

Is is worth me bothering - or take it to a marina ?!

The lean/rich mixture screw can only be about 90degrees from a certain position. Other wise you might be flooding it or damaging it. Screw it in all the way gently then back it out a turn. Also if you think there is too much fuel, then remove the spark plugs and crank it a few times to clear the cylinders. What colour is the spark. It is yellowy-orange or a bright blue spark? Have you compression tested the engine. It might be wothrwhile doing this. That will tell you if you have more major internal probs. And you said there is fuel getting to the carb, how do you know. Have you tried spraying some premix down the throat of the carb? Also 50:1 seems a little lean for an old engine such as this. Some one correct me if I'm wrong.

Joe
