I just took a motor like that apart the other day.----Worst I have ever seen as far as lack of oil on the fine machinery / parts.-----Are you mixing gas / oil at 50:1 on this motor ?----How long have you owned this motor ?----Water pump checked ?

I see nothing as far as metal shavings in your pics, flywheel stiff??? As in its hard to turn it??? You said running fine for four hrs? So were you trolling for four hrs or going spot to spot for four hrs as in run to a spot and fish then restart and run to another spot?? Shavings coming from the bottom of the motor?? At any time did you have the cowling off?? The post above about the rings being bad could be making the flywheel(crankshaft) hard to turn but you wouldnt see shavings anywhere from that on the outside of the motor...also if you didnt have the cover off the motor the day this happened im 99.9% sure those shavings you speak of did not come from the powerhead and if somehow they did come from something on the powerhead they didnt come from inside the engine because with the cowling on they could not have got to the area you posted the pic of.. Only thing i can think of is you have some part of your mag plate rubbing under your flywheel and if so how they got to where you showed the pic is beyond me if the cowling was on the motor...did it sound different when you tried to start it back up?? Any grinding noises???

Also i would yank that vro off the motor and toss it....mix your oil and fuel yourself. I had a 91 88spl and i mixed it myself...thise vro's had issues and all it takes is that thing to stop injecting oil for a min or so before you overheat and or seize up....js

Ok....that helps. Take the cover off and look around for metal shavings around and under the flywheel and anywhere in the lower cover or the pan as some call it. Also see if you can turn the flywheel by hand and if you can does it feel smooth or feel like somethings rubbing or a grinding feeling... Do you have a better pic of those shavings you saw?

Your absoluteley correct...i forgot the one i had the previous owner bought the kit and put it on.. Those spl motors were omc's way of competing with mercury when they bought chrysler and turned it into force, wich were mercury's 2nd tier motors they sold. The forces had alot of mercury parts but were cheaper...the spl's didnt come with the vro and a couple other improvements that omc had come up with feom there older models therefore they were a little less expensive but still good motors, those force motors imo were pretty crappy...

The 88 SPL models were absolutely no different from the 90 HP V-4 models!!----They were marketed without oil injection and power trim / tilt and gave folks an option.-And Mercury bought FORCE ( AKA , US MARINE / CHRYSLER )

I recently bought a motor that was "stuck". I like messing with stuff like that. Long story short, the lower unit was full of water, no oil, and the driveshaft bearings seized..... "sticking" the motor.

With no vro and power tilt and trim, that makes them different then...gave consumers a less expensive option.
