it appears my tilt assist cylinder has gone bad, because it will not assist in lifting the motor. there's nowhere to fill fluid, so i'm guessing i just need a new one. price on evinrude shop is 400$ (haha) but there's used ones on eBay for 50-100. anyone know where else i could find one online? its a 1983 70hp e70elcte - although most of the cylinders from the 1980's and 90's are the same

Look at the top of the page in the "Top Secret File", there is a list of salvage yards there, maybe one of them can help you out.

On the fluid reservoir, on the starboard side of the unit, there should be a filler plug on the rear side. It's about the size of a quarter and has a slot for a flat bladed screwdriver. That's where you fill with fluid. It may just need bled, also. If you find it, take it out and check back here with any problems.

Re: evinrude tilt assist cylinder

I recently had the same problem. I figured I would replace all the parts that attach to the piston. It was pricey, about $850 with labor costs. I wound up having a CMC PT130 power trim and tilt system installed, $900. For $50 I no longer have to lift this motor anymore. The dealer used stainless steel hose clamps to secure the motor in a down and locked position.

You must be very careful that your piston does not fail completely. Because if it does, your motor will jump upwards when you gun the engine in reverse. Also, if you strike something under water a failed piston will not keep the motor in the water, it could swing up and hurting somebody or killing them. As far as I know through countless hours of searching the net. No one fixed one of thespositionsns. According to the OMC dealer, there was five years these pistons were used 1989 to 1993. Minisia a 92. Cheapest piston I found, $470. Good luck!

Agree with daviet but if you can get one for 50 or so then I'd be inclined to take it. These cylinders are known to go after a while just part and parcel of having tilt assist I guess.

Without a part number, I'am not sure. Maybe the seller can give you a part number.
