Evinrude Tilt Problem

I have a 1987 Evinrude E40ELCUD with a tilt issue.
Yesterday A.M. I pull the boat out of garage and tilt the motor so that I could put transom saver on. I get to the lake and motor will not tilt. I can trim the motor but no tilt. Any ideas on how to trouble shoot? Is it a bad tilt switch? Bad T/T motor? I have had great help on this forum, so I appreciate any input. Thanks in advance, Dave.

When you try to tilt do you hear the motor?

The first thing I would do is check / top-off the fluid.

I'm not an expert, but my observation is that tilt requires more fluid that trim, so if the reservoir is not full, tilt wont tilt all the way.

I am sorry let me clarify. The T/T/ will only allow the boat motor to go down. The T/T motor will not go up.

Re: Evinrude Tilt Problem

Should be either the trim switch or the up relay, or the wiring connection from the switch to the relay.

MCW, I shorted the harness just after the throttle control and it seems as if the motor switch is not working. I can short the red and blue wires and motor raises. My next ? How does the throttle control come apart? I hope there is any easy way without pulling the whole control box apart.

Re: Evinrude Tilt Problem

If it's the standard OMC control box you need to take the box off the boat, but you won't need to take the box apart. There's an allen bolt on the back of the box, in the center, which is all that holds the handle on. Remove that allen bolt then wiggle/pry the handle off. The handle is held together with several screws, take them out and you can get to the switch.

Make sure you don't send any voltage up the kill wire.
