I was recently given a Evinrude Yachtwin 4. I'm trying to determine the year, how the cooling works and would like to find an owner's manual for it. On the side of the lower unit, up near the power head in a plate with the model#E4RLESR, serial # B2417033, Belgium. After reading other forum questions, I think the year is a 1990 but want someone to confirm it. I got the little guy running, but didn't see any water coming out from the lower unit for cooling. There is a rectangular plate about a foot up from the prop on the lower unit with 4 holes on each side, that spits out some water drops but no steady streams. This doesn't look normal, what do you guys think? Finally, does anyone have access to a manual for this engine and could photocopy some important pages. Maybe someone knows how to obtain a manual for this old motor. Thanks in advance. John

Yes, that is a 1990, John.

It almost certainly needs a new impeller.

You can get a reprint of the OEM manuals from www.outboardbooks.com.

Because that is copyrighted material it would be illegal to copy it for you.

Great little engine, but it requires loving care.

Good luck. :)

E = Evinrude,
4 = 4 hp
R = rope start
L = long shaft (20")
E = 9 and S = 0 make 1990
R .. just a production suffix

That plate. On the back of the leg held by two screws ?? Thats the muffler over the exhaust relief holes. You should see some water being spat out of there with exhast gas. A few drops, a spray or maybe only a mist.

The bulk of the cooling water exits underwater through the main exhaust outlet.
There's no tell tale AFAIK

You should be able to get a Seloc manual from iboats. Not sure if they will supply the OEM manual but if not can get owners manual, workshop manual etc from Ken Cook at www.outboardbooks.com

see http://www.outboardbooks.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=models.main&year=1990&ID=183301

Why does every one type faster than me?

Re: Evinrude Yachtwin 4hp-?year,?cooling,?manual

I've just been working on a '89 Yachtwin 4 long shaft for our local sailing club. My friend replaced the impeller a while ago and I put the lower unit back on and put some gear oil in it. I figured out the throttle is on the top of the engine (no manual) and the richness control is on the right side of the choke knob. It starts but I haven't run it long enough to see if I can get it to idle.

My question is: How much water should be coming out of that little rectanglar plate on the back side of the shaft housing? There is some and its not really hot, just warm.

I'm used to seeing a stream from the bottom of the upper unit so this is a bit different for me.

Any answers will be helpful except one that indicates I need to change the impeller again. Just did that on my Johnson 4hp too.

kind regards,

John
