Evinrude Yachtwin

Can anyone give me any information on this motor? Year, horsepower, any other ratings known. Having trouble getting it to run. Will try to start after not trying for a while. Will run just a few minutes then quit and won't restart. Any ideas of what is wrong with it?

Howdy H2Owell. I remember a long shaft 3hp 'Rude called a Yachttwin, but I couldn't guess the year.<br /><br />What have you checked? What is its recent history? Have you verified that the water pump is working well? Does it have the fuel pump/remote tank option or only the built-in tank? What do the spark plugs look like. . .sooty?, wet? How fresh is your fuel? Do you know when the carb was last overhauled?<br /><br />Yeah, that's a lot of questions, but to troubleshoot by remote control we have to know the answers.<br /><br />Standing by.<br />JB

We have checked the plugs, it has a built in fuel tank. We have not checked the carb or any of that other stuff. Only bought it at an yard sale today. No history was known on it. Only gave $10.00 for it so didn't figure we could get hurt too much on it even if we had to put some money into it. The fuel is new and there was not any in it when we bought it today. My husband is a water well contractor and knows nothing about small engines other than to change the oil and the plugs. He did also know how to change the bottom oil in it. Sorry I don't know more. He thinks the carb needs adjusted but doesn't know for sure how to do it. Dumb in Kansas

JB, he has now check the carb and says it looks real good. He said the plugs were wet but not sooty. His is now trying to get to the magneta. I know I miss spelled that one. When he took the bottom cover off the motor, he said it looked pretty clean. Not like he expected it to look. Now he is going in from the top.

Tomorrow, go to the library and borrow, or to an auto or marine store and buy, a Clymer Shop Manual on small OMC engines. Replace the impeller in the water pump, overhaul the carb (gummed up jets can look great), replace the points and condenser in the magneto, and the spark plugs. Follow the tune up instructions in the manual for a 3HP engine. When you are ready to start it, be sure to open the vent on the fuel tank.<br /><br />You are going to spend a few bux, but you should end up with a terrific little engine for a fraction of its worth.<br /><br />Good luck.<br />JB

JB, thanks for all your help. We now have it running, but he went over this morning and got a carb kit and new pugs. We now have $30.00 invested in it. They told him that it is a 1973. This is for the son's boat. He is an avid fishermen at the age of 14. We got him a bass tender boat for his birthday last year and he has just had a trolling motor for it until now. Now Dad is getting back into the fishing scene with him. After raising 4 older girls, and not having time to fish, this boy is his joy as they can do so many things together.

Howdy again, H2Owell. I can identify with your case. I had three wonderful girls, then seven years later, a son. We have been fishin' buddies since he was about 5. That was 30 years ago. Now we take his 12-year old son with us and I hope to last long enough to make some 4-generation fishing trips.<br /><br />Tight lines.<br />JB
